Locals have welcomed work to introduce wetlands around Tuggeranong on Monday as part of an $80 million project to improve the water quality of waterways in the ACT.

Isabella Pond and Upper Stranger Pond will be fenced off and drained as construction on the wetlands began, while Tuggeranong Pond will be partially drained during construction.
The removal of the carp from the ponds would allow the ponds to be restocked with native fish once refilled.
Tuggeranong Community Council president Glenys Patulny said the project was the result of five years of work by the community body to improve the area.
"We'd just like to make the lake healthier and safer," Ms Patulny said.
Upper Stranger Pond will be refilled once the carp had been removed but Isabella Pond would remain empty for 12 - 18 months as upgrades to the weir were carried out.
Federal ACT senator Zed Seselja and ACT environments minister Mick Gentleman both hoped the projects would restore the natural environments around Tuggeranong, improve water quality and prepare the area for potential flood events.
"The new wetlands will attract birds and other native wildlife and play an important role in improving water quality downstream," Mr Gentleman said.
"These kinds of projects are a win–win," Mr Seselja said.
"They create an even better environment and opportunities for recreation for Canberrans."
The government warned of minor disruptions to off-peak traffic alongside Drakeford Drive with detours for walkers and cyclist in place around the waters.
