Kent John Gowen, 28, and Danny Subasic, 23, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday morning charged with trespass with intent to commit theft after a routine police patrol discovered the pair at a property at Casey early on Friday.
When police executed a search warrant on Gowen's home where he lives with his partner and her children, they found a number of items, including hot water systems and taps, allegedly stolen in a series of night-time burglaries on eight newly built homes in Canberra that had just reached the lock up stage.
In applying for bail for Subasic, also of Giralang, the defence argued he had ties to the ACT, as he was living with his grandparents and working with his father's business, and that it was not clear that the alleged offence had been a premeditated by Subasic.
But the prosecution said that both the men had been found at the Casey property in possession of gloves.
Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker refused bail for both men, who will return to court next week.
Gowen also had several traffic charges adjourned. The court heard both men had been under the influence of illicit drugs at the time of their arrest and Gowen's partner had said he regularly used the drug ice.
It heard Gowen did not have a firearms licence and he was not currently doing paid work.
Subasic is on a suspended sentence from the Supreme Court for unrelated offences.
