A University of Canberra professor regarded as a world leader in the study of deliberative democracy has been awarded the university's first Australian Laureate Fellowship.

Professor John Dryzek was recognised on Friday for his work at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance, receiving $2.6 million for research work over the next five years.
His research has enabled global problems to be solved more effectively through highlighting the significance of communication in decision-making and the relationship between decision-makers and the public.
According to Professor Dryzek, this will allow him to investigate and contribute to the discussion on how to promote global justice. Professor Dryzek aims to involve people from different cultures to improve democratic communication.
He has been the Centenary Professor at the University of Canberra's Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis (IGPA) since January and expressed his gratitude upon receiving the prestigious award.
"It is an incredible honour to be recognised as a Laureate Fellow," Professor Dryzek said.
