Officers from the sexual assault and child abuse team searched the Bruce campus on Monday after the matter was referred to police.

An ACT Policing spokeswoman said the investigation was related to alleged sexual assaults in Bruce earlier this year.

Police officers seized a number of items from a workplace in Bruce and investigations are ongoing.

"Pending examination of the material seized and information received, police anticipate further interviews with witnesses," said a police spokeswoman.

In a message to all students, Vice-Chancellor Stephen Parker said the suspended staff member was an academic and the university had commenced its own internal investigation.

"A review committee under the university's enterprise agreement has been convened as part of the process for considering matters of serious misconduct," he said.

"The University of Canberra is committed to ensuring a safe campus for students and staff. It takes any allegations of inappropriate behaviour amongst its community very seriously."

Students with concerns have been encouraged to contact the Dean of Students Associate Professor Michele Fleming or ACT Policing.

"The University is unable to make any further comment at this stage and must allow legal processes to take their proper course," said Professor Parker.

"The university will continue to cooperate fully with ACT Policing."

The university spokesman said affected students could access medical support and counselling as well as pastoral and spiritual support.
