An Emergency Services Agency spokesman said a burnt-out light had triggered an automatic fire alarm at the Telita Street building.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 3.23pm. Students had already evacuated the library before they arrived.
The spokesman said the light fitting had sparked some smoke. Firefighters cleared the smoke before the building was re-opened.
A University of Canberra spokeswoman said between 200-300 students were evacuated from the library for about 30 minutes.
