Officers were patrolling through Kambah when they say they witnessed the ute do two burnouts on Sulwood Drive about 1.47am.

The 21-year-old unlicensed driver refused to pull over and sped away from police, sparking a pursuit.

Police chased the car along Athllon Drive and Langdon Avenue in Wanniassa, reaching speeds of 150km/h in the 80km/h zones.

The ute eventually pulled into Mirams Place, and police arrested the driver, taking him to the ACT Watch House.

He was charged with two counts of conducting a burnout, and one count of failing to stop, furious/reckless/dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

The Holden 'Thunder' ute was also seized by police, using tough police powers aimed at curbing street racing, burnouts, and menacing driving.

The anti-hoon laws allow police to seize the car for up to 90 days for a first offence, or permanently for a second offence, if ordered by the courts.

Police were directed to focus on road safety by Police Minister Simon Corbell under the government's current contract with the Australian Federal Police, signed earlier this year.

Tuggeranong Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sergeant Daryl Neit said police would not tolerate any dangerous driving on ACT roads.

"Our primary responsibility is the safety of everyone in Canberra," Sergeant Neit said.

"If people choose to break the law then they should be prepared to wear the consequences," he said.

The 21-year-old will face the ACT Magistrates Court next Tuesday.
