Police were forced to draw their guns when they were allegedly confronted by a knife-wielding Matthew David Hayman, 28, soon afterwards.
Hayman was arrested and appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday morning on charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possessing an offensive weapon, and assault.
Court documents said Hayman's neighbour had allegedly found Hayman and her son wrestling and trading blows on the front lawn of her Wanniassa home about 10.30pm on Sunday.
She tried to separate the men when Hayman allegedly spat blood onto her face, temporarily blinding her.
The woman managed to pull her shirt over his head, allowing her son to break free and run, before Hayman allegedly shoved her.
She then went inside her home to wash the blood from her face.
Her husband confronted Hayman, who allegedly struck him in the head with an unidentified object, causing a cut to the top left of his head.
Police arrived about 10.52pm to hear shouting coming from Hayman's home.
Officers were about to knock on the door when Hayman allegedly confronted them while holding a 32-centimetre knife.
He allegedly moved towards police, who drew their firearms and a taser, and instructed him to drop the weapon.
Hayman threw the knife to the ground and raised his hands in the air.
Court documents said officers observed he had a number of cuts to his arms and legs, and was bleeding from his mouth.
He appeared highly intoxicated, smelt of alcohol, and was verbally aggressive towards police.
The prosecution opposed bail when Hayman appeared before Special Magistrate Maria Doogan on Monday.
The prosecutor argued Hayman could endanger the safety of the complainants or witnesses if granted bail. But defence lawyer, Soraya Saikal, said bail conditions would remove any risks.
Ms Saikal said her client had a minor criminal history, and no previous convictions for violence or breaching court orders.
Ms Doogan granted Hayman bail, on condition he live in Gilmore, not be intoxicated in public, not approach the Wanniassa address or contact the complainants, and provide a $500 self-surety.
