Liz Lea & Co. present an evening of dance with four of Australia's leading contemporary dancers, with archival film and sound from the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Library of Australia. The work celebrates the legacy of Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm. The premiere, at the National Library on May 31 at 7pm, marks the 85th anniversary, to the day, that Kingsford Smith and Ulm took off from California on the beginning of the their record-breaking trans-Pacific flight. $30/$20 concession. FIND A GEM
The Canberra Lapidary Club's Winter Gemcraft and Mineral Show will be held in the Conference Centre Parkes Room at Exhibition Park on Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2, from 10am to 5pm. There will be a wide variety of rough and cut gemstones, jewellery, fossils, opals, crystals, beading supplies and lapidary equipment for sale. Members will demonstrate how to grind and polish rock into cabochons, and how to facet stones into sparkling gems. Club members' collections will be on display, and there will be free fossicking and gold-detecting sessions.

The Monaro Folk Society is having a bush dance at All Saints Anglican Church Hall, Cowper Street, Ainslie, from 8pm until 11.30pm. All dances will be taught and called, so no dance experience is required.

FLY A KITE
The free Wind Air Water – Centenary Kite Festival at Lake Ginninderra from 11am to 3pm is in celebration of World Environment Day 2013. Family and community kites will be made and flown on the foreshore of Lake Ginninderra in a huge day of activities, music and food. Activities for both children and adults include kite-making workshops, face painting and watching the flying of dozens of community kites that have been made by groups, businesses and organisations over the past six months. The Royal Aeronautical Society will be on hand to explain and give demonstrations about kite flying and the magic of wind, and the public is invited to bring their own kites to fly during the day. There will be talks by artists and music from local musicians Kooky Fandango and RAAN, a soup, bread and sausage sizzle by the Belconnen Community Service, Vietnamese food by the Vietnamese School of Canberra and gelato by Gelatissimo at Westfield Belconnen. FOG OF WAR
The Russian/German film In the Fog (2012, M), directed by Sergi Loznitsa, is set in 1942 during the German military advance into the Soviet Union. The new Nazi order brings a time for settling scores. Railway labourer Sushenya awaits one reckoning, as an accidental participant in an act of sabotage by fellow workers. But he is released by his German captors, and sent home with a handshake. He fully expects what will happen next: in the dead of night, two partisans come to kill him as a traitor. A Separation (2011, PG), directed by Asghar Farhadi, won the Oscar for best foreign film. It's about an Iranian couple undergoing a messy divorce – Simin wants to leave the country with their daughter, Nader wants to stay with his ageing father – and the complications that ensue. U CAN SING
The University of Canberra's U Can Sing children's choir is performing at the High Court at 2.30pm. This concert is part of The Musical Offering series in Canberra's Centenary year, so entry is free. U Can Sing is a non-auditioned choir for 12-year-olds, singing traditional and Australian repertoire, rounds and folk songs.
WALK AND RUN
The 2013 MS Walk & Fun Run is in support of Australians living with multiple sclerosis. Since the first event in 1989, MS Walk & Fun Run participants have raised millions of dollars to fund essential services and support for people living with MS. This year's MS Walk & Fun Run is happening on Sunday, June 2, starting from Rond Terraces, Commonwealth Park at 8.45am (run) and 10.20am (walk).
