Weather throughout September broke records in terms of rainfall and temperature, with the average maximum temperature inching above the previous 19.4 degrees record by 0.3 degrees, meteorologist Sean Carson said.

“That beat the old record, set in 1972,” he said.

“That's off the back of our warmest August on record and our warmest winter on record.”

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the highest temperature for the month was recorded on September 2 at 25.2 degrees, just above the 2012 high of 23.3 degrees.

September 2012 also recorded a chillier low at minus 6.8 degrees, while last month's lowest temperature was minus 3 degrees on September 13.

Canberra also recorded record breaking rainfall over the month, with the 91mm almost three times the total recorded for September 2012.

The majority of the rainfall was recorded over September 17, when the capital received 57.8mm and broke the record for the wettest 24 hour period for the month. An additional 16.6mm was received over the following two days.

Mr Carson said the recent falls, totalling more than 100mm in some parts of Canberra, was far beyond the historic average rainfall of 52mm.

He said further rain was forecast for the capital on Tuesday, while snow was expected down to 1000mm on the Brindabellas on Thursday.

“It's still pretty typical for spring,” he said.

Mr Carson said the capital should also brace for winds as a cold front approaches Canberra.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for ACT and surrounds, forecasting gale force winds in most districts on Tuesday.

Damaging winds from 60km/hr with peak gusts over 90km/hr were expected to develop over Monday afternoon and evening throughout the Snowy Mountains and South West Slopes, reaching gusts of 120km/hr in alpine peaks.

Peak gusts throughout the regions are expected to intensify to 100km/hr by Tuesday.
