Other race days give out gold cups and silverware, but the winner of the stakes receives an opal necklace.
There will be record prize money for the Black Opal Stakes this year - $300,000 - with first-placed getting $165,000, second place $57,000 and third $27,000.
The necklace trophy is an Australian black opal that is worth $5000.
The inaugural Black Opal Stakes in 1973 was won by Rich Reward. Now, in its 45th year, the day is one of the events that heralds in autumn in Canberra.
This year's event is on Sunday, March 5. Gates open at 11.30am with the eight-race local racing program from 1pm.
Attractions will include fashions on the field, live music, food alley and jumping castle and face painting for the kids.
