More than four years after a sex-Skyping scandal that made headlines around the world, Canberra's Australian Defence Force Academy has achieved White Ribbon Accreditation for its work on preventing workplace violence against women.

The accreditation, which took 18 months to achieve, is to be presented at a ceremony at the academy on Wednesday, White Ribbon Day.
The academy's reputation took a big hit in April, 2011, when a male cadet persuaded a female cadet to have sex with him and then used Skype to broadcast what followed to his mates.
Midshipman Kate Millward, 21, now in her second year at ADFA, recalls having to defend her choice of career to her parents in Albury at the time.
"The Skype scandal broke about a week before I came to my officer's selection board here," she said. "My parents' initial reaction was, 'No, we are worried about you doing this'.
"I reassured them there are always going to be people who don't have the values or the mindset of the organisation we work with.
"It didn't worry me that the incident happened; it was how they dealt with it. I believe it was very well handled by [then] Commandant Bruce Kafer."
Vice-chief of Defence Force, Vice-Admiral Ray Griggs, said he was shocked at the time.
"It was not so much 'not again' as 'how can this be happening at this point in time?'," he said.
"[We had to ask] 'have we been doing the right thing?'. Clearly there was still more to do."
While a comprehensive review by Anti Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick found much that was good at ADFA despite what Admiral Griggs conceded had been a "troubled past", she made numerous recommendations.
Current commandant, Air Commodore Alan Clements, said the Broderick review had been invaluable.
"Ms Broderick summarised the changes that needed to occur," he said. "Commandant Kafer [who was reinstated after having been stood down at the insistence of the then defence minister, Stephen Smith] and others headed us down the right path."
Admiral Griggs agreed: "He [Commodore Kafer] was reinstated and he remains a highly respected former commandant.
"A lot of the post Skype [scandal] work was driven by him when he came back and Alan Clements has built on that and done some outstanding work."
Admiral Griggs does not believe White Ribbon accreditation is a silver bullet.
"For anyone to think that if you put 1000 young people in an institution like that and not have problems from time to time would be naive in the extreme," he said.
"[But] I believe there is no way now we could have the systemic issues we had in the past."
Vice-Admiral Griggs said in recent years, when there had been "isolated incidents", they had been handled "particularly well". "There is a willingness to report that perhaps wasn't there before," he said.
John Hensman, 20, a second year RAAF cadet from Sydney, agreed "100 per cent".
"If something inappropriate happened now it is very likely to be reported," he said.
"Each and everyone of the cadets and midshipmen here would act swiftly. We wouldn't try and tackle each incident on our own. We would go through the chain of command immediately as we've been taught."
Army officer cadet, Victoria Roadmight, 20, from the Mornington Peninsula, was not aware of the Skype scandal when she put her hand up for admission.
"Interaction between males and females at ADFA is very different [to when you are in school]. Everyone has matured a lot. Coming into the military and undergoing the initial training phase a lot of us have realised it's not high school anymore," she said.
