Some of Australia's first female architects and urban designers who helped shape the nation were also recognised.

The new street names announced by Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry on Thursday included Bischoff Street, Briger Street, Butterworth Street, Feilman Street, Grassick Street, Grenfell Avenue and Holford Street.

Ingpen Street, Luker Lane, McCredie Street, Morath Street, Mottram Street, Nosworthy Lane, Pumpurs Crescent, Robin Boyd Crescent, Shugg Street, Sutherland Crescent, Trevor Gibson Way, Ussher Street, Woodward Loop and Zoie Lane were also named.

The streets will house the first blocks of the suburb Taylor, which the Land Development Agency will sell by ballot in March.

Canberra could have become a very different city if not for architects Lord William Graham Holford and Grenfell Rudduck, who worked at the Department of Post-War Construction in the 1940s and '50s.

The town centres of Belconnen, Woden Valley, Weston Creek and Tuggeranong were significantly shaped by town planner Oskars Pumpurs, who joined the National Capital Development Commission in 1958.

More recently, Tim Morath played a critical role in planning the territory's sustainable transport, leading a number of important projects in the 2000s.

A gift given by the local newspaper to Canberrans, the Canberra Times Fountain at the corner of Ainslie Avenue and City Walk, was designed by architect Bob Woodward in 1979. Woodward also designed the fountains at the High Court of Australia and the forecourt of Parliament House.

Surveyor-General of the ACT and member of the ACT Place Names Committee, Jeff Brown, said other street names reflected the theme of honouring leading female architects, as the suburb itself was named after Australia's first female architect, Florence Mary Taylor.

Margaret Feilman was the first female architectural cadet in the Public Works Department of Western Australia, while Millie Grassic was another of Australia's first women to become landscape architects.

Architect and British migrant Richard Butterworth was well-known for working to establish a national insuring scheme for construction faults. He worked on the construction of the new Monash University and, in 1986, was awarded an Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal.

Mr Brown said one of his favourite parts of the naming process was contacting family members of those honoured.

"In most cases we were able to contact immediate family - sons, daughters or grandchildren - and a couple were Canberra residents," he said.

"In all cases they were very pleased and honoured that their ancestors were being recognised. We are very pleased with the contribution these eight women and thirteen men made to Australia and in some cases Canberra."

Registrations for the 126 single residential blocks in Taylor will open on February 10 and close on February 20.
