A number of Canberra Grammar School students have been sent home due to an outbreak of whooping cough.

Nine students have been sent home since the first case of the highly infectious disease was confirmed approximately a month ago.

A spokeswoman for the school said it was a common occurrence at schools, and that Canberra Grammar was working with parents and ACT Health to handle the outbreak.

The school is circulating fact sheets to parents and urging staff to be on the lookout for symptoms.

ACT Health does not believe there is an outbreak of the infectious disease in the wider community.
