Father of three Rick Hinds, from Gunning, was fighting a fire about 8km south of Gunning on Monday. A sudden change of wind turned the flames towards his NSW Rural Fire Service crew's tanker.
He suffered burns to his face, throat and hands and was airlifted to Concord Hospital in Sydney, where he is now in a stable condition.
His wife, Krystaal Hinds, also an RFS firefighter, was listening to the fire radio as the crew battled the flames. "I heard there was a casualty, and I knew, just knew it was him," she told Channel Seven.
