A woman is assisting police with inquiries after a 39-year-old man was shot in McKellar on Wednesday.

The shooting is the second gun-related incident in Canberra today, after a gun was fired at a home in Griffith in the early hours of the morning. The two shootings are not related.

In the latest incident, a 39-year-old man was shot in the right shoulder and was found by officers outside a home in Tipping Place about 11.30am.

He was taken to  Canberra Hospital and his wounds are not believed to be life threatening. Police have so far been unable to give any more details about the victim.

First Constable Greg Ayton said a .22 rifle had been seized by police.

He said it was still early in the investigation and he was calling for more witnesses to come forward.

“There are a number of witnesses that police are speaking to,” he said.

He could not say whether the man was shot in the house or outside, or whether the victim or the woman assisting police lived at the house or what, if any, links there were between them.

Police could also not comment on the possibility of charges. Police closed the street to everyone except residents as forensics officers collected evidence on Wednesday.

A resident who lives nearby told Fairfax Media she saw police searching a young woman earlier before taking her away. She said the neighbourhood was usually “very quiet”, but did mention a murder committed nearby more than a decade ago.

Earlier, police were called to the Stuart Flats on Light Street about 2am, shortly after a gun was fired, sending a bullet through the window of a ground-floor flat.

Police ask anyone with information about either incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at the website.
