Worksafe ACT has begun the investigation after a tip off about the asbestos on Saturday last week, leading to the safety authority issuing a prohibition notice on the site that day.

An asbestos assessor went to the warehouse on Sunday, confirming asbestos-containing material was present at the site, after works to upgrade the ceiling revealed disturbed some ceiling panels that "became friable" in the past few months.

The asbestos discovered was not loose-fill amosite asbestos and is unrelated to that substance previously discovered in homes affected by the Mr Fluffy scandal.

It is possible some stock stored in the warehouse, but sold in the past few months, may have been impacted, but WorkSafe ACT is yet to establish a timeline of events in its investigation.

The investigation is related only to the warehouse and does not extend to the Harvey Norman retail store in Fyshwick and

The safety authority has urged anyone who had recently bought stock stored in the warehouse, or who worked in the building, and have health concerns, to contact their general practitioner.

A spokesman for Harvey Norman said the company had also engaged its own "independent expert to provide an urgent report" and it was cooperating fully with WorkSafe ACT.

"Harvey Norman will be contacting customers who may have purchased stock over the period and is working with licensed asbestos assessors and removalists on the management of the remaining stock," he said.
