The shops were transformed by a group of locals to draw attention to the Australian marriage equality vote and the fact Canberrans have until midnight on Thursday to enroll or update their electoral details to take part in the vote.
The Markets Wanniassa owners James and Fiona Lester organised the installation.
"It's supposed to start the conversation about marriage equality, and to encourage people to vote," Fiona said.
"Obviously we believe in 'YES', but the yarn bombing is about getting people to vote full stop."
The Lesters are wearing their heart on their sleeve when it comes to marriage equality.
They have set up a booth in their shop - "A Love Station" - at which shoppers can make a heart that will be part of a display supporting marriage equality.
Fiona hopes to collect hundreds of hearts to make a powerful display.
