A small group of passionate planners, T One 5, is hoping to alter the way southsiders interact with their shared spaces by thinking outside the square.

The ideas were flowing at its first meeting in mid-December.

Filling pot holes with pot plants, running a slip-and-slide down a residential street, rebuilding cracks in concrete with Lego, encouraging amusing street art and wrapping trees with colourful linen were all discussed.

Project mentor Hamish Sinclair said the group's core message was to ask the community how they would like to use empty spaces.

"Tuggeranong has a slightly different culture and feel to the rest of Canberra in many respects," he said.

Mr Sinclair hoped the group would help the community realise they could have an immediate and positive impact on their town centre.

The need for revitalisation in the town centre unites politicians from both sides of the divide.

Canberra's Labor MP Gai Brodtmann said she would welcome any effort to increase foot traffic in the town centre. She expressed concern about the growing number of empty offices and retail spaces.

"The spaces around the gazebo between Anketell and Cowlishaw streets are all but deserted," Ms Brodtmann said.

"The Tuggeranong town centre needs a viable short to medium-term solution to ensure it retains its vitality and local businesses flourish."

Liberal ACT Senator Zed Seselja said grassroots efforts to spark revitalisation were particularly commendable. "I think that it needs to be done in conjunction with a range of other measures," he said.

Youth planners Natalia Weglarz, 22, and Charlene Liau, 27, were among the first people to jump onboard the T One 5 project.

"We could be leaders in this kind of planning," Ms Weglarz said.

"It's about getting youth involved and finding a way that is new and fun and different."

Ms Liau said planners were not looking to impinge on existing businesses but intended to fill the empty spaces in between.

"It can be anything and everything," she said.

"We want people to be as imaginative as they can with what they want to see in the area."
