AFL analysis

Another big Saturday has come and gone and it was highlighted by Hawthorn’s super performance against fellow top-four fancies Collingwood.

The Magpies came hard at the Hawks in the third quarter and cut the deficit to just two points at one stage.

But Hawthorn responded with their usual brilliance as they romped to a five-goal victory and maintained second spot on the ladder.

Gold Coast took a huge step forward in their development as a footy side up at Metricon Stadium with a 40-point thumping of Geelong.

The Suns trailed by three goals in the third quarter but booted 11 of the last 13 majors to secure the convincing win and consolidate their spot in the top eight.

Harley Bennell played a career-best game that saw him record six goals, 27 disposals and 11 marks in what was clearly a three-vote performance.

At Etihad Stadium, Essendon kept in touch with the top eight by winning their crucial match against fellow finals aspirant Adelaide by nine points.

After a horrible goalkicking display last week, the Dons started the game tonight with eight goals straight and led by 36 points in the third quarter.

To the Crows’ credit, they kept coming but Essendon did enough in the end to hang on for a very valuable four premiership points.

The Bombers are now just percentage behind eighth-placed North Melbourne and if the Kangaroos happen to lose to Melbourne tomorrow, Mark Thompson’s men could sneak in to the top eight on Sunday night.

Earlier in the day, top-placed Port Adelaide preserved their one-game buffer on the rest of the competition with a crushing win over the Western Bulldogs which featured an eight-goal bag to Jay Schulz.

And another slaughter occurred at Patersons Stadium tonight as Fremantle made light work of an insipid Brisbane outfit.

The Dockers won by 83 points in the end with Hayden Ballantyne backing up his six-goal haul against Richmond last week with a five-goal bag tonight.

The Lions' half-time score was a pitiful 0.1 (1) and it didn’t get much better for them in the second half.

More importantly, the result saw Ross Lyon’s men enter the top four.
