AFL analysis

WEST COAST     3.2, 5.4, 8.8, 12.11 (83)

ST KILDA           1.5, 6.6, 7.8, 8.10 (58)

West Coast: Kennedy 2, Ellis 2, Cripps 2, Sinclair, Shuey, Darling, Priddis, Brown, Cox

St Kilda: Montagna 2, Riewoldt 2, Dunstan 2, Maister, Templeton

West Coast: Priddis 28, Gaff 25, Selwood 23

St Kilda: Dunstan 29, Montagna 27, Ray 26

St Kilda were far from disgraced tonight and even led by two goals in the third quarter.

But West Coast flexed their muscle from that point to boot seven of the last eight goals and secure a hard-fought win to maintain their perfect start to the year.

The Eagles are now 3-0 for the second time in three years and have set up a tantalising clash against fellow undefeated side Geelong at Simonds Stadium next week.

AFL analysis

COLLINGWOOD     0.4, 6.7, 8.9, 11.10 (76)

GEELONG             3.5, 6.7, 9.12, 12.15 (87)

Collingwood: Elliott 5, White 2, Toovey, Blair, Sidebottom, Goldsack

Geelong: Hawkins 4, Horlin-Smith, Varcoe, Murdoch, Guthrie, Johnson, Stokes, Mackie, McIntosh

Collingwood: Beams 28, Sidebottom 29, Pendlebury 26

Geelong: Selwood 30, Duncan 30, Stokes 29

What a cracking contest that was! The final quarter was a battle between Jamie Elliott and Tom Hawkins as both players did their best to help their team win the game with three goals each.

Elliott and Hawkins ended up with five and four goals respectively for the match.

Collingwood were gallant tonight, no doubt about that.

Whenever the Cats got away, the Pies found a way to reel them back in.

But Geelong just always seemed to have the answers and ended up winning another close one. They really are the masters of the tight contests, aren't they?

Geelong were probably more precise with their disposal too and, crucially, also did the job in the clinches with more contested possessions (139-129) and tackles (66-55).

Captain Selwood was a driving force behind those discrepancies and led from the front with 15 contested possessions, 11 tackles and eight clearances to go with his 30 disposals.

Other notable efforts were Brent Macaffer limiting Steve Johnson to 20 touches and Tom Lonergan keeping Travis Cloke very quiet with just eight touches and no goals.

So the Cats improve their perfect record to 3-0 while the Pies slip to 1-2.

What a clash next week between Collingwood (1-2) and Richmond (1-2)!

Q4 27 MIN, COLL 76 GEEL 87

Tom Hawkins kicks his third goal of the final term and fourth for the match! What a clutch performance from the Tomahawk! He slotted it from 50m out after accepting a super pass from Mitch Duncan off two steps lace out on the chest.

46 seconds left in the match!

Q4 26 MIN, COLL 76 GEEL 81

This is frenetic stuff!! Very few clean disposals, both teams willing themselves at the ball in the middle of the ground. The players know how serious the situation is.

1:40 left on the clock!

Q4 23 MIN, COLL 76 GEEL 81

Jamie Elliott kicks his fifth goal! What a little superstar this guy is! 3:21 left on the clock. Plenty of time left for the Pies. What a finish! The Cats have now flooded their backline with eight defenders.

Only 63,000 fans at the MCG tonight. A bit disappointing.

Q4 21 MIN, COLL 70 GEEL 81

Jamie Elliott keeping the Pies in this game. He slots his fourth from 35m out in front. Been one of Collingwood's best.

Q4 20 MIN, COLL 64 GEEL 81

5:30 left on the clock. Pies need to act now.

Q4 13 MIN, WC 74 STK 51

St Kilda in strife now. Josh Kennedy kicks another goal and the gallant Saints will need something special from here.

Q4 18 MIN, COLL 64 GEEL 81

Jimmy Bartel's shot on goal from outside 50m goes through for a minor score. Dawson Simpson marked it a centimetre over the line.

Travis Varcoe departs the field with a cut head

Q4 11 MIN, WC 68 STK 51

That will make it tough for St Kilda. Cripps slots one and it's 17 points the margin now.

Meanwhile out west, the Saints are hanging in there. They trail West Coast 62-51 after 10 minutes in the final term.

That goal has really brought the crowd into it. Cats fans the most vocal they've been all night. Can the Pies respond? Less than 10 minutes left in this one now.

Q4 12 MIN, COLL 64 GEEL 74

Tom Hawkins kicks a super goal from tight on the boundary 30m out. Very good kick indeed and he lets the Magpies fans know about it too!

Q4 9 MIN, COLL 63 GEEL 68

Jamie Elliott kicks a great goal from 45m out on a slight angle. Really clutch goal that one and it's now a five-point ball game. Good work from Lumumba in defence beforehand.

Geelong on top in disposals (313-289), clearances (27-26), inside 50s (45-37), contested possessions (112-110) and tackles (57-45).
