Prior to tonight, Collingwood's biggest win was its 38-point victory over Richmond in Round 4.

Tonight's 86-point drubbing of St Kilda, the Pies' biggest win against the Saints in 30 years, silenced the critics who said Collingwood does not put sides away.

The win has catapulted Collingwood temporarily to third place with seven wins, ahead of Gold Coast, which plays Adelaide on Sunday.

The two stories from the match were Travis Cloke's five-goal haul and Steele Sidebottom's first-quarter report for high contact on Maverick Wheeler.

Expert commentators Leigh Matthews and Wayne Carey both said Sidebottom could expect at least two weeks for the knock that sidelined Wheeler for the match.

Dane Swan and Brodie Grundy were late withdrawals but Pies fans have little to worry about with replacement Josh Thomas telling Channel 7 he knew he would be playing as early as Wednesday, suggesting Swan was merely rested.

The Pies have a 10-day break before their traditional Queen's Birthday clash against Melbourne.

Then they face the Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Carlton before a tough run home.

On tonight's form, especially the second half, Collingwood looks a top-four side. They have depth, a solid defence and a quick and efficient midfield.

Their one lacking ingredient, a potent forward, was on song tonight. Cloke's ability to fire from here could determine Collingwood's fate this season.

Josh Thomas strolls in and kicks his third goal with less than a minute to go.

Elliott marks inside 50. Kicks his fourth goal. Demolition by the Pies now. First side they have put away this year.

As Travis Cloke puts through his fifth goal. One of Collingwood's best tonight. Four goals after halftime.
