AFL Round 5: Brisbane v Richmond

sport icons

FULL TIME:
BRISBANE LIONS 9.9 (63)
RICHMOND 15.16 (106)

Those who merely tuned into the final scores to check if their tip was correct would assume the Tigers won comfortably at the Gabba.

While the 43-point margin was comfortable, Richmond players were anything but until the final quarter when they kicked away.

The Lions, missing Daniel Merrett (suspended), Pearce Hanley (injured) and Matt Leuenberger (injured), booted five unanswered goals to lead by five points at the 17-minute mark of the second term.

Even at halftime when the Tigers led by 14 points, the result looked up for grabs.

It wasn't until the final term when the Tigers kicked six goals to two that they truly appeared to hit their straps.

With Hawthorn and Geelong awaiting in the next two rounds, Damien Hardwick's men, now 2-3, have plenty of work to do if the Tigers are to be competitive against the league's best.

"It was a real grind but it was a solid game of footy," skipper Trent Cotchin told Channel 7 after his 32-disposal display.

"They (Hawthorn and Geelong) are the two premier sides of the competition.

"The pressure is on and we've just got to play four consistent quarters of footy."

Players from both teams formed a guard of honour for 250-game champion Jonathan Brown, who finished with four goals.

"I think we saw a bit of Jono Brown in his heyday here in the last quarter," Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt said.

"Hopefully we can use this win as a bit of a springboard. We've got 10 days to prepare for the Hawks."

The Lions are still winless and on the bottom of the ladder.
