Live AFL: North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs

The Western Bulldogs overcame the pre-match withdrawal of Adam Cooney to upset North Melbourne by 18 points. They were impressive across four quarters and can hold their heads high after the doomsayers were predicting a tough year ahead. They probably won't play finals but now they have three wins after seven rounds.

FINAL SCORE: North Melbourne 12.11 (83) Western Bulldogs 15.11 (101)

Such a good win by the Bulldogs with few observers considering it possible. They improve their record to 3-4, joining the Kangas on that line. Positives across the park. Brian Lake's job on Drew Petrie. Tory Dickson with four goals up forward. Griffen silky-smooth through the midfield. Matthew Boyd's grunt around the packs to gather 44 possessions.
Q4 - 25.41: SIREN!
A short quarter and the Bulldogs take the four points! A gutsy performance. Plenty of questions now for the Kangas. They've gone missing since their memorable victory over Geelong in round three. Today's result makes for three losses in four weeks.

Q4 - 23.11:
Only two goals scored this quarter so it will be brief. Only a couple of minutes left. The Bulldogs are basically home. A great win. They've shown plenty of grit, highlighted by substitute Clay Smith - now on the ground - who moments ago applied a great tackle and was rewarded with a free kick.

Q4 - 17:50:
Cordy with a terrific mark in the forward 50. Another big Bulldogs giving some hope to their fans. His kick is a shocker though. Only one point is the result from a gettable distance.

Q4 - 13.31: GOAL!
Drew Petrie pack mark! He plays on and drills the goal. The Kangas cling to hope of stealing this match. Time is running out though.

Q4 - 11.58: GOAL!
The elusive first major of the final term. Gia gets it ... showing his experience. Margin out again ....

Q4 - 10.20:
Contested possessions differential now out to 46. That tells you plenty. Matthew Boyd leading the way with 37 touches ..... 3 vote performance? Too early to judge.

Q4 - 8.13:
Set shot from Harper peels to the left for the Roos. Margin now 16 points. Three goals for the lead ... certainly not out of reach.

Q4 - 5.25:
First goal of the final term proving elusive for both teams. And won't it be important? Players from both teams looking tired after the frenetic third quarter. The longer it take for a major to be scored the better for the Doggies.

Roos were much better in the third term but, significantly, the Doggies managed to match their intensity. One stat is telling: 36 more contested possessions for the match to the Dogs, indicative of their attack on the ball and loose balls. Can't see the Kangas reeling in a 20-point deficit across 30 minutes. One question: will the Bulldogs introduce sub Clay Smith after he played in the VFL on Saturday.

Q3 - 31.30:
Siren for the final break. A great quarter of footy. So different to the opening half. Five goals each. Margin 20 points.

Q3 - 30.05:
It appears McIntosh suffered a dislocated knee .... sounds horrible but perhaps not as bad as it could have been. Of course he's off the ground. Certainly he was clearly in a lot less pain after his knee seemed to correct itself. Another reminder of what a brutal game AFL footy is.

Q3 - 27.20:
Oh dear ... McIntosh has gone down and he's in a lot of pain. The Roos big man is clutching his right knee as the trainers rush to his assistance. He collided with an opponent's back in the marking contest and immediately went to ground in trouble. We all hope it's not serious.

Q3 - 22.51: GOAL!
Liam Anthony with his second for the term. Margin cut to 19 points. Match being played out in sharp contrast to the the dreary first half. The tempo is well up.

Q3 - 18.28: GOAL!
Robert Murphy on the run! Gee, he's a classy mover. Bulldogs out by 26 points with less than 10 minutes left in the quarter. The challenge has been set down for the Roos.

Q3 - 16.01: GOAL!
Aaron Edwards. Again, very important. The intensity of this game has gone up sharply in the 'premiership quarter'.

Q3 - 14.43:
Back-to-back goals for Sherman! Tenacity paying off once again. The former Lion is absolutely pumped. Their approach is better today. They won't give up their ascendancy lightly.

Q3 - 11.59: GOAL!
Roos again. Petrie, who has been quiet, give the Kangas consecutive majors ... first time in quite some time. Roos back in the game.

Q3 - 8.43: GOAL!
Liam Anthony with a terrific set shot major. Gee, that was important. Roos have been better in this term.

Q3 - 5.35: GOAL!
A great intercept goal from Daniel Cross. Those sorts of acts are making the difference in this match. Margin out to 25 points.

Q3 - 2.01: GOAL!
Thomas snags a vital one for the Roos ... just to stay in touch. Importantly it wasn't a set shot so it took the pressure off.

Q3 - 0.56: Dickson! GOAL!
Great start to the half for the Bulldogs. Fourth goal to the newbie. Suddenly they have another good option in the forward arc. Forget Barry Hall!

The Bulldogs have come to play. Brian Lake doing a stirling job in defence on Petrie, making for two quality games in a row so far. Boyd getting hands on the ball and stoppages and Griffen showing clash with his dash and set-up across the ground. A 19-point advantage is the result. The Roos must turn around their attack on the contest or risk another defeat. Second half will be fascinating.

Q2 - 33.04:
Half-time siren. Bulldogs on top, both with their approach and on the scoreboard. The Roos can expect a bake from Brad Scott.

Q2 - 31.09: GOAL!
Wallis. The Bulldogs youngster has been good and gets a goal to his name. Bulldogs back out to a 19-point lead.

Q2 - 27.21: GOAL.
Shocking miss by the umpires! Lindsay Thomas boots a goal off the ground in the square but only after a bad (non)-decision by the umpires. Goldstein was set to run into an open goal before he was tackled by Addison. Should have been dropping the ball! Thomas sheepishly then kicked the goal. That moment will get airplay in coming days.

Q2 - 27.01: GOAL!
Dickson's third for the Bulldogs. Justin Sherman, who has been good, heavily involved in the lead-up. Bullies out by 19 points and their fans can now get bullish about an upset win today.

Q2 - 20.45: GOAL!
Importantly the Bulldogs reply quickly. Gia grabs his second. As it becoming the trend the Bullies are getting their goals from smaller forwards and running midfielders.

Q2 - 19.37: GOAL.
Leigh Adams for the Kangas. Roos benefited after a head clash between Griffen and Roughead left the two Dogs down and out, effectively two men down.

Q2 - 16.18: GOAL!
Ayce Cordy marks strongly up forward! That alone brings smiles to the faces of Bulldogs supporters. Cordy converts his kick and the Bullies go out by 13 points. Critical couple of minutes coming up for the Kangas to swing the balance.

Q2 - 12.24: GOAL!
Perseverance pays off for the Bulldogs. Higgins pounces on the ball after a chain of handballs and drills a goal, his second. Overall the Doggies are working harder and they are reaping the rewards, out to a seven-point lead. Twelve minutes left in the half.

Q2 - 9.18: GOAL!
The Kangas reply quickly. Harper gets one back for the Shinboners. One radio commentator remarks about how mediocre this game is. Must admit ... it had failed to match the heights of several games this round so far.

Q2 - 7.59: GOAL!
Giansiracusa marks courageously and converts his chance, making the Roos pay. Bulldogs out by more than one goal.

Q2 - 6.13:
Petrie misses with a set shot. His kick from 30 metres slided to the right and the Roos have wasted a chance to reclaim the lead.

Q2 - 2.40:
Injury concern here for the Bulldogs. Higgins slides into a contest and his head collides with a Roos opponent. That knocked him around. The Bulldogs midfielder goes off for medical checks.

Q2 - 0.50:
Lindsay Thomas squanders a golden chance in front of the sticks! He as running into an open goal and tried to be too cute. Opportunity goes begging.

Impressive term by the Bulldogs, particularly with Griffen in top form. Tory Dickson has stood up in the forward line and don't they need him? The Kangas need more spark as they've been beaten around the stoppages. Boyd getting first hands on the ball many times at the contest. The Kangas will have to battle hard for the four points today.

Q1 - 32.28:
Siren sounds for quarter-time. Bulldogs on top but they haven't quite capitalised on their advantage. Game wide open from this point.

Q1 - 29.19:
Griffen off to a flyer. The Bulldogs midfielder is doing things his way. Late in the term a pinpoint pass by Roughead was disappointingly dropped by the Dogs forward when it should have been marked. Griffen already has 10 possessions. Bulldogs have six more Inside 50s than the Roos to this point.

Q1 - 25.10: GOAL! Dickson!
The Bulldogs have a new forward option. Dickson snags his second and the Bullies move into the lead once again. Dickson is showing something thus far.

Q1 - 21.25: GOAL!
Accuracy doing plenty for the Kangas. Three goals straight. Lindsay Thomas came from nowhere to mark in the forward 50 and booted truly with his kick. The lead changes again.

Q1 - 17.10:
Bullies well on top but not on the scoreboard. 'Visitors' are almost all the statistical categories, comfortably ahead of overall disposals (54 - 31) and with a good edge on the tackles count.

Q1 - 14.50: GOAL!
Tory Dickson marks and goals for the Bulldogs and they reclaim the lead. Impressive build-up to that goal with Dickson - who has come into the team - marking on his chest and converting.

Q1 - 13.10:
Matthew Boyd getting plenty of the ball so far. Ryan Griffen looking typically dangerous around the stoppages. He's been in silky form in recent weeks. Bulldogs playing with plenty of dash.

Q1 - 6.09: GOAL!
The Roos again. Two goals in little more than one minute. Ben Cunnington converted and the Kangas grab the lead. Will they again be surpassed?

Q1 - 5.01: GOAL!
The Kangaroos settle. Drew Petrie boots beautifully with a direct shot after a free was paid against Brian Lake. The Petrie-Lake match-up will be a great one to watch.

Q1 - 2.30: GOAL!
Bright start by the Bulldogs. Higgins kicks truly with a set shot. Bulldogs by seven points.

Clay Smith is the Bulldog who has come in for Cooney. Smith played in the VFL yesterday so Cooney's withdrawal certainly wasn't anticipated.

Liam Anthony, Lindsay Thomas and Leigh Adams will start on the pine for the Roos. Brad McKenzie will wear the sub's vest.

The Western Bulldogs have suffered a blow with the late withdrawal of Adam Cooney. Mitch Wallis, Justin Sherman and Luke Dahlhaus will start on the bench, with Clay Smith the substitute.
