GOAL! West Coast - Sheppard kicks his first after roosting a set shot from just outside 50m.

West Coast 12.15 (87) North Melbourne 12.2 (74) -Q4 - First Bounce
Final quarter underway. Mullett the sub for North has replaced Robbie Tarrant at three-quarter time, Sheppard has replaced Adam Selwood for West Coast.

West Coast 12.15 (87) North Melbourne 12.2 (74) - Three-quarter time
A big smother from Kerr to stop Swallow snapping at goal late in the quarter means West Coast go to the last change with a 13-point lead. North hit the front with a three-goal burst in that quarter, only for West Coast to stretch the game to a match-high 19 point margin straight after. It could go either way.

West Coast 12.15 (87) North Melbourne 12.2 (74) - Q3 -27:49
GOAL! North Melbourne - Cunnington marks in the forward pocket and casually bananas a goal from 20m. North Melbourne the kings of accurate kicking for goal are still right in this match.

West Coast 10.12 (72) North Melbourne 11.2 (68) - Q3 - 20:53
GOAL! West Coast - Running 50m goal from Hurn re-takes the lead for the Eagles. He paddled the ball in front of himself in the centre-square to get away from Adams. It looks like a broken finger for Selwood on the bench.

West Coast 9.12 (66) North Melbourne 11.2 (68) - Q3 - 19:08
Adam Selwood coming off with a hand injury. Might only be a dislocated finger.

West Coast 9.12 (66) North Melbourne 11.2 (68) - Q3 - 15:45
GOAL! North Melbourne - 60m bomb from Sam Wright bounces through after being set loose by a hand-pass from Ziebell. Eagle chasing the ball back with the flight couldn't get a touch to rush it through. A North triple-treat to re-take the lead.

West Coast 8.12 (60) North Melbourne 8.2 (50) - Q3 - 5:49
GOAL! West Coast - Scott Lycett kicks a set shot goal from 20m after a short pass from Josh Hill in the pocket. Shuey was going full pelt from 50m when he shot on goal and Hill read the short-fall to take an uncontested mark.

West Coast finished the first half stronger so the onus is on North Melbourne at the start of the third term.

West Coast 7.10 (52) North Melbourne 7.2 (44) - HALF TIME
Busy end to the first half! Swallow was decked on half forward and while players tussled Thompson took the ball quickly and kicked a long point, with the siren sounding a second later. GOAL! West Coast - Scott Sellwood roves the ball off a boundary throw-in about 25m out and kicks a goal. West Coast have dominated the second half of the second quarter and are now getting some separation on the scoreboard. One minute to go on the count-down clock.

Port 8.6 (54) Richmond 13.13 (91) - Q4 - FULL TIME
Broadbent puts through a goal on the siren to shave six points off Richmond's winning margin. Richmond's scoring dried up in the third term but they were the dominant team throughout and probably could have won by more.

West Coast 6.10 (46) North Melbourne 7.1 (43) - Q2 - 26:17
GOAL! West Coast - Hurn breaks a run of five straight points for West Coast with a 50m set shot bomb. Kangaroos were attacking down the wing but Harvey's turn-over in the corridor gave West Coast field position to strike in the other direction.

Port 7.5 (47) Richmond 10.10 (70) - Q4 - 10:45
GOAL! Port - Port trap the ball in their attacking 50m and Young gets the reward running onto a loose ball off a pack.

West Coast 4.5 (29) North Melbourne 6.0 (36) - Q2 -4:32
GOAL! North Melbourne - Great end-to-end run from the Kangaroos capped by Daniel Wells 50m on the run

Port 6.4 (40) Richmond 10.10 (70) - Q4 - 4:47
GOAL! Richmond - That should make it safe. Riewoldt runs into an open goal to boot his third and takes out the goal-umpire with the shot for good measure.

West Coast 4.4 (28) North Melbourne 5.0 (30) - Q2 - First bounce
GOAL! North Melbourne - Costly turn-over from Hurn gifts MacMillan his second goal of the game, and this took just 15 seconds after the bounce!

Port 6.4 (40) Richmond 9.10 (64) - Q4 - First Bounce
Last quarter underway with Richmond up by four straight goals. Still a warm favourite to close this match out and win for the second time this season.

All single goal-kickers in the first quarter with a number of lead-changes. North right in the match with Brent Harvey and Ryan Bastinac leading the way.

Port 6.4 (40) Richmond 9.10 (64) - Q3 - Three-quarter time
Port, unlike their 2011 selves, fought back in that quarter to make the margin 23 points at the last change. However 10 of the 15 goals have been kicked to the end Richmond will attack in the final quarter.

West Coast 3.4 (22) North Melbourne 4.0 (24) - Q1 -26:09

GOAL! North Melbourne - MacMillan snaps an impressive goal to keep the Kangaroos close

Port 6.4 (40) Richmond 9.9 (63) - Q3
Renouf went in and under to get the ball and was taken high as he climbed back up...he converts the set shot from 30m! With just 2.10 on the count-down clock to go in the third quarter the Power are back within 23. Safe to say they've had the rub of the green with some of the umpiring in this quarter.

Port 5.4 (34) Richmond 9.9 (63) - Q3
Tyrone Vickery is given the red shirt for Richmond and is out of the match, Shane Edwards his replacement

West Coast 3.2 (20) North Melbourne 2.0 (12) - Q1 -15:50

Port 4.3 (27) Richmond 9.9 (63) - Q3 - 16:11
Renouf misses a set shot from 40m away to the near side. Richmond were stiff not to get a number of frees as the ball was in dispute on the half-back flank.

GOAL! Richmond - Riewoldt goals in the opening minute to continue the onslaught.

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 8.7 (55) -Q3 - First Bounce
Any chance of a Port comeback or will Richmond record a percentage boosting win to resurrect finals hopes?

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 8.7 (55) - Half Time
It's all Richmond at half time. Port got a late inside 50m to improve to a 2-19 differential in the second quarter. It's been a reprisal of their hopelessly uncompetitive lows of 2011. Tuck, Nahas and Deledio are all dominating for the Tigers.

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 8.6 (54) - Q2 - 25:42
GOAL! Richmond - Nahas won a free kick and converted from 40m out directly in front. Two minutes to go on the count-down clock and Port have one inside-50m for the quarter. It's like heritage round and Port are paying homage to their 2011 season...

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 7.6 (48) - Q2 -22:00
GOAL! Richmond - Deledio runs in to an open goal after Port's defence capitulated under a high ball and no opponent was next to the Tiger at the spill.

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 6.5 (41) - Q2 - 17:48
GOAL! Richmond - Floodgates are quaking...Riewoldt looked like he'd blown the opportunity when his overly casual snap along the ground appeared to be rolling through for a point...only for King to arrive in the goalsquare and soccer through a major.

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 5.5 (35) - Q2 -16:10
GOAL! Richmond - Reward for dominance as Nahas traps Stewart holding the ball 30m out from goal and converts from directly in front. Red alert now for Port who have one inside-50m to Richmond's 11 in this quarter.

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 4.5 (29) - Q2 - 13:57
Tigers with all the territory but can't put it on the board. Tuck has kicked a behind on the run and now Maric has snapped a behind. Nahas failed to make the distance with a set-shot on the boundary in between.

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 4.3 (27) - Q2 - 9:11
Martin marks 40m out on the boundary in the left-hand pocket but puts his set shot across the face. Port going with a slight wind advantage in this quarter but it didn't hold up the ball on this occasion.

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 4.2 (26) - Q2 - 5:04
GOAL! Newman kicks a 45m set shot goal to get the quick reply for the Tigers. Loose men everywhere in the build-up, starting with Nahas in the centre square who had time to run, bounce, lose the ball and get it back after the bounce stayed low, then pass.

Port 2.2 (14) Richmond 3.2 (20) - Q2 - 2:30
GOAL! Port - Renouf marks 45m from goal and goes back for the set shot...and puts through a 50m goal! Hawks fans must be wondering exactly where he found that skill on the road to South Australia.

Port 1.2 (8) Richmond 3.2 (20) - Q2 - First Bounce
Pfeiffer is Port's sub today so it is far from a like-for-like change with Hitchcock who is out of the game with a hamstring injury.

Port 1.2 (8) Richmond 3.2 (20) - Q1 - Quarter Time
Richmond with the upper hand early but both teams still feeling each other out in this one. Bad news for Hitchcock as he is subbed out at quarter time.

Carlton 15.20 (110) GWS 6.7 (43) - FULL TIME
GWS failed to score in the last quarter as Carlton made sure it did get some percentage for their afternoon's work. It was an admirable first three quarters from the Giants but Thornton and Hampson proved the difference against a team strapped for talls.

Port 1.2 (8) Richmond 3.1 (19) - Q1 - 22:41
GOAL! Port - Broadbent kicks a belated opener for Port from a 50m set shot with just three minutes to go on the count-down clock.

Port 0.2 (2) Richmond 3.1 (19) - Q1 - 19:27

Carlton 14.20 (104) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q4 - 22:51
GOAL! Carlton - Walker kicks a 50m set shot goal to extend the margin to 61. GWS fought hard but injuries have proven costly after half time.

Port 0.2 (2) Richmond 2.1 (13) - Q1- 18:38
GOAL! Richmond - A topical free kick as King makes the most of a tackle and it slips high...He converts the 40m set shot and Richmond extend the lead

Port 0.2 (2) Richmond 1.1 (7) - Q1 - 13:18
Deledio missed a 45m set shot after smooth ball movement from Richmond spotted him on the lead. Promising signs but the finish was lacking.

Carlton 13.16 (94) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q4 - 16:43
GOAL! Carlton - All about the Blues' talls today as Hampson kicks a 50m goal on the run to put through his third of the game.

Port 0.2 (2) Richmond 1.0 (6) - Q1 - 9:03
Riewoldt crashes a pack 10m out but gives away a free kick even though the ball inside 50m bounced through for what would have been a goal.

Carlton 12.15 (87) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q4 -9:22
GOAL! Carlton - Hampson marks, plays on and goals to kick his second of the game. Blues starting to stretch the difference now.

Port 0.1 (1) Richmond 1.0 (6) - Q1 - 3:26
GOAL! Richmond - Criminal turn-over from Port Adelaide puts the ball in dispute 50m from goal...Shane Tuck wanted the loose ball the most and his hand-ball into the path of Riewoldt allows Jack to soccer through his first goal of the day

Port 0.1 (1) Richmond 0.0 (0) - Q1 - 2:20
First score is a set shot behind from McCarthy after he backed his chances from 50m on the boundary

Carlton 11.14 (80) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q4 -5:51

Action underway at AAMI Stadium as Richmond and Port go in search of win number two in 2012.

Carlton 10.14 (74) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q4 - 1:15
GOAL! Carlton - It's the Thornton show as he marks 20m from goal and converts the set shot. He's the one Blue kicking straight out there.

Carlton 9.14 (68) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q4 - First Bounce
Josh Bootsma has been subbed in to make his AFL debut at the expense of Henderson

More good news for North with Nick Naitanui confirmed as a late withdrawal replaced by Lycett. Game starts at 4.40pm Melbourne time.

Both teams out on AAMI Stadium with the first bounce about seven minutes away. Stay with our live blog for coverage of major events and talking points from both games.

Carlton 9.14 (68) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q3 - Three Quarter Time
Carlton extended their lead out to 25 points and should have the four points in the bag from here in spite of a feisty effort from GWS. As for a percentage booster? Don't rule it out with Brogan subbed out and Setanta also injured for the Giants.

Carlton 9.14 (68) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q3 -27:09
GOAL! Carlton - At last the Blues kick straight as Thornton marks a tumbling ball inside 50m and shoots accruately from 35m. With just seven seconds to go on the count-down clock that might be enough of a margin to make sure the Blues aren't upstaged this afternoon.

Carlton 8.14 (62) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q3 -23:05
Blues peppering but no knock-out blow...Robinson blazes from 50m with a floating ugly kick that somehow bounces straight for a behind rather than the necessary deviation right to go through for a goal.

Carlton 8.13 (61) GWS 6.7 (43) - Q3 -21:37
More great footy from Carlton can't get the reward, this time Simpson runs and bounces 75m and sends a 45m kick wide to the right.

Carlton 8.12 (60) GWS 6.6 (42) - Q3 -18:51
Another point of the week for the Blues...this time Murphy at full speed puts his right-footed kick from the more difficult pocket into the opposite nearly went through the tighest of windows for a great goal.

Carlton 8.10 (58) GWS 6.5 (41) - Q3 -15:17
O'hAilpin landed awkwardly from a ruck contest and looks to have injured his left lower leg...possibly an ankle. No stretcher call though so if he can shake it off he'll be able to come back.

Carlton 8.10 (58) GWS 6.5 (41) - Q3 - 13:16
GOAL! GWS - Scully's raking left foot found an unmanned Davis 30m from goal and he salutes with the set shot. GWS hanging in there!

Carlton 8.10 (58) GWS 5.5 (35) - Q3 -11:35
Eddie Betts tries to kick goal of the year after toying with an opponent on the boundary 30m from goal...his banana kick misses though. Crowd went up and cheered it anyway, fancy footwork!

Carlton 8.9 (57) GWS 5.5 (35) - Q3 -7:59
GOAL! Carlton - Robinson marks a short pass from Bower after some loose checking in the Giants back 50m and kicks a set shot from 35m. It feels like the knock-out punch is coming.

GOAL! Carlton - Hampson kicks a set shot goal to get Carlton out to a 16-point lead.

Carlton 6.8 (44) GWS 5.4 (34) - Q3 - First bounce
Will Carlton start the third quarter with a bang or can GWS continue to stick with the Blues?

Carlton 6.8 (44) GWS 5.4 (34) - Q2 - Half Time
Carlton turned up the heat in the last three minutes of the quarter but couldn't hit the scoreboard. GWS broke even with Phil Davis' late goal to keep the margin at 10 points. It's been a flat performance from Carlton and a pleasing show of commitment from the Giants.

Carlton 6.8 (44) GWS 5.4 (34) - Q2 - 24:17
GOAL! GWS - Phil Davis snap a left-footed goal that bounces through from 25m...he roved a Bugg pass after a tumbling entry inside GWS forward 50m caught Carlton in a two-on-two.

Carlton 6.7 (43) GWS 4.4 (28) - Q2 - 20:56
Another 50m set shot for GWS, this time Coniglio...he pushes it across the face.

Carlton 6.7 (43) GWS 4.3 (27) - Q2 - 18:26
GOAL! Carlton - A bit of Bower power! He intercepted a GWS pass just backward of the centre circle and ran with three bounces to 50m, kicking a running goal! That one might make the three nominations for goal of the week.

Carlton 5.7 (37) GWS 4.3 (27) - Q2 - 15:33
Chain of GWS hand-passes from a boundary throw-in ended with McDonald on a tight angle in the forward pocket...he had time to straighten for a drop-punt but put it across the face.

Carlton 5.7 (37) GWS 4.2 (26) - Q2 - 12:19
Greene marked at the top of the 50m and had to get close to the man on the mark to make the distance...he puts it through for a point. Carlton made a sloppy turn-over from the kick-in but McDonald under pressure could only kick a high ball out on the full next to the behind post.

Carlton 5.7 (37) GWS 4.1 (25) - Q2 - 10:44
GOAL! Carlton - Robinson got a free-kick for high contact and sent the ball to 15m out in the forward pocket where Lucas marked...he kicked a 20m set shot goal for his second of the afternoon.

Carlton 4.7 (31) GWS 4.1 (25) - Q2 - 8:14
GOAL! Carlton - Blues got the quick clearance and Armfield's kick around the body was marked by Thornton at the top of the goalsquare. Almost like the Blues flicked the switch at the centre bounce.

Carlton 3.7 (25) GWS 4.1 (25) - Q2 -7:41
GOAL! GWS - Scully marks running back with the flight of the ball and puts through a 30m set shot! Carlton have fallen asleep at the controls here...and GWS are exploiting the opportunity!

Carlton 3.7 (25) GWS 3.1 (19) - Q2 -5:53
Dean Brogan back on for GWS after getting his forearm bandaged.

Carlton 3.6 (24) GWS 3.1 (19) - Q2 -2:56
Gibbs misses a 50m set shot...Kreuzer marked the kick-in 55m out but turned the ball straight back over.

Carlton 3.5 (23) GWS 3.1 (19) - Q2 - 2:11
GOAL! GWS - Perfect start to the quarter for the Giants. James McDonald won a contested possesion and sent a hand-ball to O'hAilpin who kicked a funny-spinning ball low and straight for a goal! Two in quick succession for the Giants.

Carlton 3.5 (23) GWS 2.1 (13) - Q2 - First Bounce
Action underway in the second quarter at Etihad. A reminder that this blog will also be across Richmond's match in Adelaide against Port and later on North's match at Patersons Stadium against West Coast.

Carlton 3.5 (23) GWS 2.1 (13) - Q1 - Quarter Time
A late GWS goal closing the margin to 10 points might liven Carlton up a bit. It was a casual first quarter. GWS hung in there well but turn-overs have both gifted Carlton goals and prematurely ended promising attacking moves. The Blues are going through the motions.

Carlton 3.5 (23) GWS 2.1 (13) - Q1 - After the siren
Setanta marked with just seconds to go 30m out from goal on a slight angle...and puts it through after the bell! O'hAilpin gets his first goal against his old side!

Carlton 3.3 (21) GWS 1.1 (7) - Q1 - 27:04
Scotland took a mark going back with the flight and in a bad sign for the Giants it looks like Brogan injured his wrist attempting to spoil. His arm got trapped between Henderson and Scotland in the marking contest.

Carlton 3.3 (21) GWS 1.1 (7) - Q1 -22:42
GWS took the ball end-to-end from the kick-in with Shiel showing his pace. Sumner marked 30m from goal and put through his first goal in the AFL. GWS on the board.

Carlton 3.3 (21) GWS 0.1 (1) - Q1 -21:29
A scrappy inside 50m ends with Thornton tumbling through a behind from 20m out.

Carlton 3.2 (20) GWS 0.1 (1) - Q1 -19:54
Tuohy shrugged Giles on the wing and took a bounce to get to half forward...he sent it long to 25m out where Kreuzer marked! He pushed the set shot across the face though.

Carlton 3.1 (19) GWS 0.1 (1) - Q1 -17:08
Brogan marked 30m from goal in the pocket but his set shot is across the face and doesn't make the distance...spoiled into the post for a boundary throw-in...James McDonald roved it best from the throw-in and snapped a point.

Carlton 3.1 (19) GWS 0.0 (0) - Q1 -15:09
GOAL! Carlton - Kennedy got himself into trouble coming out of defensive 50m and bombed to a pack of Carlton players...Robinson sent the ball to 55m out where Betts marked, he handed off to Lucas who ran to 40m out and kicked Carlton's third goal.

Carlton 2.1 (13) GWS 0.0 (0) - Q1 - 10:24
GOAL! Carlton - Another kicking turn-over from GWS on the half-back flank...Mitch Robinson spotted up a loose Kade Simpson 35m from goal on a tight angle...His left-footed set shot has enough on it to carry the pack!

Carlton 1.1 (7) GWS 0.0 (0) - Q1 - 7:57
Scotland off half back found Betts at the top of the 50m, he passed short to Walker...he pulls his set shot from 50m wide to the near side (left) for a point.

Carlton 1.0 (6) GWS 0.0 (0) - Q1 6:28
GWS are earning possessions but kicking turn-overs have ended a number of attacks so far. Murphy has been busy winning the ball early for the Blues.

Carlton 1.0 (6) GWS 0.0 (0) - Q1 2:35
GOAL! Carlton - Murphy was held off the ball and put his free kick inside forward 50m...Kreuzer was first to the spill and was tackled off his kick...Walker took it on the bounce and snapped a goal from 5m out.

Carlton 0.0 (0) GWS 0.0 (0) - First Bounce
Action underway at Etihad Stadium. Have Carlton gone too easy on GWS at the selection table or will we see another thrashing for the league's new boys?

CARLTON v GWS - Pre-game
Welcome to today's live AFL blog. We can only hope Kevin Sheedy's great rivalry with Carlton means GWS has something up their sleeve for today's first game.

Two Victorian teams take to the road for tough Sunday opponents with Richmond chasing victory against Port Adelaide and North Melbourne heading west to take on the West Coast Eagles. But first Carlton hosts the GWS Giants in what shapes as a horrible mis-match at Etihad Stadium.

  • Thanks so much for the Carlton-GWS commentary- great % game for the blues! It's wet here in France but the result has made up for the dreadful rain!
