Perhaps Scott Camporeale felt the same way when, as if to even the score, Crows defender Kyle Hartigan then got pinged for tapping the ball towards the boundary line while under pressure from Ryan Schoenmakers.

Yeah, we've all seen them - or we think we have, anyway. That absolute howler, that ridiculous decision, that unbelievable free kick, paid - or not paid - by the umpires. And in finals, well, everything is just that little bit more important.

We're not immune to spotting the odd questionable call or two. But terrible is a strong word, so let's call these the most "controversial" umpiring decision of the finals series so far.

Richmond v North Melbourne, elimination final

It was a "diabolical" mistake, according to coach Damien Hardwick.

With fewer than eight minutes to go in the last quarter of their elimination final against the Roos, Tiger Shane Edwards tackled Ben Cunnington just 20 metres from Richmond's goal.

Cunnington let go of the ball, not disposing of it correctly, and players from both teams stopped in anticipation of Edwards being awarded a free kick.

But the umpire did not blow the whistle and Richmond went on to lose by 17 points.

Hawthorn v West Coast, qualifying final

A kick from Hawk Will Langford travelled about 70 metres before the umpire judged he had deliberately put the ball out of bounds. This free kick didn't necessarily anger the Eagles-dominated crowd, but we can picture the fists shaken at the television screens around Melbourne.

In another incident, the Eagle's Brad Sheppard was awarded a free kick and Liam Shiels passed the ball to him clumsily, giving away a 50-metre penalty.

Coach Clarkson insisted his team would "roll with the punches", but he clearly was not happy with the decisions.

"Yeah, especially the one that went about 70 metres, that's pretty harsh," he said after the match.

"Shiels gets done for 50m because it doesn't land on the chest of the West Coast player. They do it five minutes later, we don't get the 50. It's just like, easy call to make. One gets it, one doesn't."

Hawthorn v Adelaide, semi-final

The Hawks ran all over the Crows, so to some extent the point is moot on these particular decisions.

But fans of both sides will agree they were questionable at best.

Video Mistake?

Hawthorn forward Luke Breust was one of four players scrambling for the ball in front of the Hawk goal just before half-time.

He grabbed it, swung his foot towards it, got it over the line and the umpire waved both flags.

But the umpire's decision was overruled in a video review, deciding Breust's foot did not touch the Sherrin.

On radio the next day, Breust said it did.

Deliberate out-of-bounds rulings strike again

The umpires were also particularly zealous about enforcing the rule against deliberately sending the ball out of bounds.

Two decisions came in for criticism, the first when Birchall kicked the ball across the boundary as he was grabbed by the Crows' Josh Jenkins. The second was against Hartigan under pressure from Schoenmakers.

"That was a stinker, that first one," Clarkson said, referring to the decision against Birchall.

"A couple went against the Crows later on, it's just confusing. If they could fix that up it'd be good."
