2013 AFL fixture in full
Rohan Connolly: Fairer, but some are more equal than others
Live blog with Rohan Connolly from 12 noon
Fixture fairer in 2013: AFL

We'll wrap it up there. Thanks for all the questions and comments. Think it's safe to say that like the All-Australian team, when it comes to the fixture there's always somebody displeased. In a nutshell, while I think Adelaide is lucky and North Melbourne stiff, there seems to be a few less inequities than the 2012 version. Of course, we won't know for sure for another 11 months or so!

Which teams have done best in the 2013 fixture? Do you think the AFL has addressed the issue of fairness in the draw? What part of your team's fixture is fair or not? And does exposure on Friday night football present an unfair advantage for the Haves at the expense of the Have-Nots?

Discuss all matters AFL fixture with Rohan Connolly, here, from 12 noon , or leave your comments now.

  • Hi Rohan

I do think the draw and some of your subsequent comments conflict with your claim that, across the board, this is a fair/even draw. The draw that Hawthorn has been handed is even worse than last year and, in my opinion, absolutely outrageous! The fact that Sydney gets a significantly easier draw demonstrates the determination of the AFL to look after that particular club at all costs. How could the AFL possibly justify the two grand finalists getting such differing draws - they hand Sydney GWS and the Suns in the first two rounds and we get a horror stretch for the first seven weeks, including a game against West Coast in Perth coming off a 6 day break when West Coast enjoy the luxury of a 15 day rest. I'd be very interested in your thoughts on why Hawthorn has copped this two years running.

    • Hi Steve, Hawks have copped a tough one, no doubt. But the seven toughest draws according to our formula are for seven of the top eight, which seems better than previous years. Collingwood and Geelong, like the Hawks had tough draws this year and get them again in 2013. Think the worst aspect of Hawthorn's draw is the start, first seven against top eight sides. They're stiff, no doubt, but they're also good enough to withstand it.

    • I Have to say that on the whole I agree with Steve R with the exception that Hawthorn's run home does not appear as fierce as it was in 2012.

  • Can the AFL just give Sydney the Premiership for the next 5 years and the rest of us can use our winter weekends more constructively?

Handed a dream draw again but they're the premiers? They get 5 games against the bottom 4, I get they want to play GWS twice for a Syndey Derby, so simple solution is they dont play one of the other bottom 3 once. Its not a Home and Away Fixture, its a manipulated draw so there's no rule saying you have to play everyone once. Sydney will finish top by a game (that extra game against a bottom 4 side) and get home ground advantage through the finals.

Throw in the salary cap exemption for 'Sydney must be succesfull for marketing reasons'...I mean 'cost of living allowance', and really, I wonder why I would even both watching AFL next year.

Go Melbourne Storm, no freekicks for this interstate NRL team!

    • Hi Bucks, Swans have certainly fared better than most recent premiership teams, and as you say, two games against GWS certainly helps. Their run home is challenging, though. As for the other point, while it is a handicap, I think everyone has to play each other at least once, otherwise it tends to the farcical.

  • Poor North. Why do we keep getting spanked?
I mean sure, 2012 season wasn't too bad, but that stood out because it wasn't too bad.

    • Hi wonderlama, I think given where the Roos finished, they've got as much cause for complaint as anyone. And you're right, they've had their share of ordinary fixtures, this year a notable exception. But three of the top four twice, two trips to Perth and eight six-day breaks is a very tough ask indeed.

  • Just wondering your thoughts on the fixture and I was disappointed Its fair to say I mean the inconsistency and balance is poor in rounds 2 and 3 The much anticipated Pies Blues match with Mick against Bucks is a Sunday not Saturday Night or Saturday Arvo like it should be instead we get Melbourne and Essendon on Saturday Night and in Rd 3 another big game with Collingwood playing Hawthorn on Sunday as well with Melborune playing West Coast on Saturday and also why are some other big clubs not playing each other twice as has been the case for years now with Carlton and Hawthorn now not having played each other twice since 2006 and Collingwood and Richmond not since 2007 it happens every year didn't the Tigers request to play Pies twice this year again didn't happen just wondering your thoughts on that cheers.

    • Hi Bolly, Without trying to be apologetic for the AFL, there are so many contractual impositions it's nigh on impossible to satisfy everyone and every request. Scheduling is one issue, but for clubs it's a double-edged sword as often getting the better timeslots also means getting a tougher draw. But if you think the top clubs should get the toughest run and vice versa, this fixture overall is a better effort than last year's I think.

  • Rohan, as a fellow Bomber man can you answer me one puzzling aspect of this draw?

I would assume that year by year Victorian teams play interstate clubs at their home and then at our home. Either once each in one season or taking it in turns each year if they only play once.

Why do the Bombers have to play the Crows in Adelaide again, yet the Crows have not played us here since 2009??

How do you play a side at home 4 years in a row, without ever playing them away? Not sure if there are other teams with this occuring, but it stinks...
