The 22-year-old midfielder was contracted until the end of 2017 and this week signed a contract extension that will keep him in red-and-blue until the end of 2020.

Viney has played 55 games for Melbourne since he joined the club at the end of 2012 as a father-son selection (No. 26 overall). His father Todd was a Demons captain.

He told the club's website he was passionate and excited about the direction in which the club was going.

"It was a very simple decision and easy decision for myself," he said.

Viney said he did not explore the possibility of moving to other clubs.

"When I first got to the club, we were really struggling and that was a really difficult time to go through," he said.

"Seeing close friends go to other clubs and play finals and successful football was extremely challenging.

"I wanted to know what it felt like to struggle, because ... the good times would be all that much sweeter.

"We're starting to finally see the fruits of those foundations that have been planned over the years and it's a really good time and exciting time to be at the footy club."
