Dal Santo to join Kangaroos

St Kilda's decision to allow Nick Dal Santo to join North Melbourne is another "bold move" from the Saints, reports sports writer Michael Gleeson.

* Paul Chapman has become an Essendon player, signing with the Bombers as a free agent. Chapman, 32, will be reunited with his former coach Mark Thompson on an incentive-based deal in which he can earn a second season. Read more

* Michael Gleeson reports that St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo will join North Melbourne as a free agent today after paperwork was completed Friday to confirm him as a free agent.  Dal Santo will now receive a contract offer from North Melbourne as a restricted free agent. St Kilda will not match the offer and so the veteran Saint will become a North player by the 2pm free agency deadline. Read more

Can some please explain how the Dal Santo deal is good for us. No Delaney and draft pick not confirmed yet and only second round at best.

* Jake Niall reports that gun GWS midfielder Dom Tyson will be moving to Melbourne. The Demons have finalised a deal in which Tyson will join them in exchange for their pick number 2, with Melbourne also receiving GWS pick number 9 in return. Read more

* Jake Niall reports Geelong's 2011 premiership key forward James Podsiadly is set to be confirmed as an Adelaide player as soon as today. Podsiadly, 32, has been considered by a number of clubs, initially including Carlton and Fremantle, but the Crows were the keenest suitor. Read more

* The deal that will see Brisbane Lions defender Sam Docherty move to Carlton should be done either Friday or early next week, his manager Matt Bain said. Bain said he had hoped to have completed the deal last week but it has been held up by the Lions wanting to continue scoping the landscape before finalising a decision.

The No. 12 draft pick from the 2011 national draft has met with new Lions coach Justin Leppitsch but has maintained his wish to return to Victoria.

‘‘I would have liked to have got it wrapped up last week ... (draft picks) 28, 29 they are going back and forth over which sounds a little bit funny,’’ Bain told SEN.

‘‘We’ll get something done either today or the start of next week.’’

* Delisted Geelong veteran Josh Hunt believes he still has much to offer a club in his twilight years.  However, Hunt confirmed that Greater Western Sydney had been the only club to have shown interest.

‘‘I went up there and had a medical so you can sort of take out of there whatever you want,’’ Hunt said.

‘‘I’m not someone who likes to start something and walk away when it’s not really finished or I don’t feel like it is, I still feel like I have that desire to compete so until I don’t have that or I get told by every club that I’m not needed and not wanted that’s when I’ll close the book on it.’’

He said an attractive lure of GWS was that he could help develop the younger players.

‘‘I’ve been at a club where we’ve had a lot of success and I feel like I’ve learnt a lot from the players and the coaches that have been around me,’’ Hunt said.

‘‘I think being up there and hopefully being able to help and impart a little bit of those skills and the stuff that I learnt off those guys, (that is) something I really really enjoy doing, is helping these guys develop and at same time still playing footy.’’

* North Melbourne defender Luke Delaney said St Kilda was looking likely as his likely destination in his quest for more playing time.

‘‘I’ve been at North Melbourne footy club for five years now and I’ve probably been in and out for most the last three yeas and I’ve always relied on probably injury and form dropping off from other players at times just to get a game,’’ Delaney said.

‘‘After probably waiting that many years I thought it was time for me to look elsewhere and find opportunities at another club.

‘‘I picked (St Kilda) as I found that they probably had the best opportunity form to play footy week in week out. Whether or not the deal actually gets done is another story but that will probably be my best fit and fingers crossed that’s where I’ll end up.’

* Emma Quayle reports that the onus is on the Giants to finalise a deal trading Heath Shaw and Taylor Adams.

They owe it firstly to Shaw, whose decision to join them, after Lance Franklin turned his back, was important for the club. They also owe it to Adams, who they could have signed up weeks or months ago but instead made him wait. Read More

  • Trade period is way too long. Seems like I've been reading about "Dal Santo set for North Melbourne" reports for the past 6 months. Keep it short and you'll force all the teams to stop dragging their feet.

      • Indeed. Would rather him playing for us than against us. A good example for the young guys, a battle-hardened warrior ready to go.

        • Melbourne teams don't need first round draft picks they just wait two years and they can pick up an experienced Brisbane first round pick for practically nothing
