* Former Geelong star Paul Chapman is bullish about his new AFL home, saying Essendon are a genuine premiership chance. Chapman will join the Bombers on November 1 when they sign him as a delisted free agent. The midfielder and forward was a key part of Geelong's three premiership teams between 2007 and 2011 and is confident he can make that four flags before he retires. "That (premiership contention) was probably one of the criteria I did have," Chapman told the AFL website. Read more

* Elliot Yeo
has left the Lions and is headed to West Coast in exchange for pick No.28. Yeo has played 27 senior games for the Lions since his debut last season. The WA native had requested a trade to the Eagles last month.

* Jared Polec
will play for Port Adelaide next year, with the Power, Brisbane and Greater Western Sydney finalising a complicated three-way swap of draft picks. In the deal finalised on Thursday afternoon, Port Adelaide gains Polec from the Lions as well as the Giants' pick 21. Brisbane has received picks 34, 22 and 48 for its former first-round draft pick, while the Giants have taken Port's pick 14. Read more

Carlton has confirmed they have traded for Sam Docherty, the first of five potential AFL departures from Brisbane. The Blues gave up pick 33 for the defender, who grew up following the club. Docherty made his debut this season and played 13 games, including 11 of the last 14 matches. Read more

* Key forward Stewart Crameri has finally found his way from Essendon to the Western Bulldogs on the second-last day of the AFL trade period. The Bombers had hoped to gain more than the Bulldogs' second-round draft selection for Crameri before finally agreeing to accept the No.26 pick for their leading goalkicker of the past three seasons. * Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro told SEN that the trade of Stewart Crameri to the Western Bulldogs would be completed soon, with Dodoro meeting Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney on Thursday morning. Dodoro said the Bombers had been busy attempting to convince Crameri to remain at the club, with stand-in coach Mark Thompson "on the phone to him" last week, but it had been to "to no avail". ‘‘I think we’re resigned to the fact that he’ll leaving our footy club,’’ Dodoro said. ‘‘We’ve given ourselves every chance to try and change his mind even up to as late as last week but he’s pretty head strong that he wants to leave and we’ve got to respect that.’’

*Allan was in a brighter mood when discussing Taylor Adams however, having little hesitation to label him a future leader at Collingwood. ‘‘I’m happy to pump up Taylor,’’ he said. ‘‘He could captain that club. Taylor’s an outstanding young man, he’s tough, he’s the toughest young kid I’ve seen play for a long time. Collingwood’s got a really, really good player there don’t worry about that.’’ Hine was happy to agree saying it was Adams potential on and off the field that had attracted the Magpies. "There's no doubt he's got exceptional leadership qualities and he’s a fine young man there’s not two ways about that,’’ he said.

* Greater Western Sydney football manager Graeme Allan launched a spirited defence of new recruit Heath Shaw. The veteran defender, who played 173 games with Collingwood, was traded by the Magpies in exchange for promising youngster Taylor Adams. There has been speculation that Shaw was a disruptive influence a the Magpies – although recruitment manager Derek Hine said on Thursday that the club would have been ‘‘more than happy’’ retain him if the deal had fallen over – and when Allan was asked by Tim Watson on SEN about whether he was worried about Shaw, he took offence at the suggestion. ‘‘I’ve known Heath since the day that he was born. I played with his uncle (Tony) and I played with his father (Ray) and Heath and Rhyce grew up around the Collingwood footy club with my young bloke so I know him to be an outstanding young man,’’ Allan said. ‘‘I know him to be an outstanding A-grade footballer and we’re very lucky to have him so the check-list is the fact that I’ve seen the boy grow up’’. He also said he was not concerned with what happened at Collingwood. ‘‘I don’t care what happened between he and Collingwood. I know the kid to be an outstanding young man. I know him very well. Like in every thing we have arguments sometimes in life, people get divorced these days, but I know the boy to be an outstanding young man.’’

* Fremantle recruit Colin Sylvia believes his best years are still ahead of him. Read more

  • Heath Shaw is a talented footballer and as a Pies man I would have been delighted if he had stayed. He is an exceptional footballer and is likely to play beyond his 5 year GWS agreement. He is an exceptional defender whether one on one or in a pack. His runs and disposal out of defence is club leading - his foot skills and endeavour will be missed.
    At least he is not going to the Blues and I'm also pleased he has a good contract and is wanted where he is going. At this time of year we lament the passing of many favourite sons of our respective clubs. This is a worthy outcome for both clubs and both players. How many of these deals can that be said for?

    • Heath Shaw is a nimrod, Collypies should be wrapped he's gone.

      Crameri is just the player the Bulldogs need. He will be a huge boost for them, plus he is only 25 years old. The best is yet to come with him.

      Im getting a good vibe on the doggies. Maybe some bark in the next few years. Same with the Kanga's. If the Eagles can snare a few like Everitt, they may press hard next year too.

      • This is bad trading once again for Briabane. Losing first round draft picks like Polec 5, Docherty 12 and probably Longer 8 all for picks in the 20s and 30s... How is that fair?
