Invincible Brownie tells of crash

Brisbane Lions captain Jonathan Brown tells of how he was hit by a car while cycling on the Gold Coast.

The legend of Jonathan Brown didn't need a great deal of embellishing. After all, this is a man who had his face awfully mashed twice in a season, then once again in training, and returned to the fray as fearless as ever.

He did require major surgery but it was tempting to think he just iced up his broken cheekbones with a cold stubbie, checked himself out of hospital and drove his ute home to take the greyhounds for a walk.

So when a plot unfolds about Brown cycling along on the Gold Coast, having a mix-up with a car and then having the car come off second best, Brown's reputation as the toughest man in the game goes to a whole new level.

The Lions skipper gave the club and its supporters heart palpitations this morning when news filtered through that he had been hit by a car while cycling with a group of 20 riders through the Currumbin Valley.

Such a collision could have had serious consequences indeed and with scant information available soon after the incident, it was natural to worry about the potential outcome.

Oh ye of little faith. Brown was taken to hospital briefly to get 10 stitches in his elbow, although it's likely he was tempted to simply sear up the wound with a burning stick on the side of the road.

The car, a Hyundai, was towed away with a ding in the bonnet and a bloody divot in the windscreen, where Brown planted his elbow. It never stood a chance.

Although the damage to his elbow isn't serious, it's another injury to a man who many people are starting to think is less like an AFL forward and more like Wolverine.

In the opening game of 2011, Brown made accidental contact with the knee of Fremantle's Luke McPharlin and required major surgery on a broken jaw and cheekbone.

It was a shocking injury and the photos from hospital made it look like someone had backed over his head with a truck.

Amid calls for him to change his playing style to be more circumspect before charging into a pack of players, Brown returned later that season, only to cop another blow to the head.

In round 17, a bingle with Geelong's Harry Taylor and team-mate Mitch Clark resulted in another bad facial injury, ending his year and sparking questions about his future in the game.

He vowed to play on and he did - but not after a pre-season training injury in February left him with another fracture to the cheekbone. He laughed that one off as well, playing 20 games for the Lions and booting 47 goals.

Twitter went into overdrive at the news of Brown beating up a defenseless car. Cats forward Tom Hawkins summed up the general theme when he wrote: "I hear BIG Jonathan Brown got hit by a car whilst cycling on the Gold Coast! #poorcar"

Brown has long been a sponsors' favourite, but there's clearly an opening for a cement company to get him on board. It's obviously what he eats for breakfast.

  • I've known a guy that completely wrecked a car when he got T-boned whilst cycling by someone doing 60km, he rolled along and over the top of the car and didnt even get a scratch, but hey rather than focus on the road safety message here, just let the Chuck Norris jokes fly

    • More to the point: Is this Guy accident prone or what? Head collisions, car collisions all point to a serious Doof-head Doofus to me! Odd that great players like Brown, Judd & Matthews have these odd quirks in their personalities!

      • A couple thoughts:

        a) begs the question ... what the eff is Luke McPharlin's knee made out of? Clearly must be kryptonite.

        b) Clive Palmer better make sure Johnno Brown's not on an early morning swim next time he backs the Titanic 2 out of harbour.

and c) next time someone shows the footage of Leigh Matthews busting the behind post, Brownie will be like 'Pfft, Wuss'

        • Had a car hit me on my motorbike; it needed 4 new alloy wheels, every window replaced, all the panels on each side too... I think I was taken for a ride, my bike had a fairing clip come loose and a scuffed handlebar end!
