The Bombers can get off the foot of the ladder on Sunday if St Kilda beats the Brisbane Lions by a margin of about eight goals at Etihad Stadium.

"To be honest, I won't be looking at the result. I honestly didn't know who Brisbane are playing and when they are playing. I'm not too fussed," Worsfold said.

"The Essendon Football Club is a very proud club and I think they've won only one wooden spoon [1933] in their history.

"So, if we avoid that, it would be wonderful, but it's not something I'll be sitting there praying for."

After finishing their difficult 2016 season with a rare win, Essendon could lose their hold on the No.1 draft pick if the Lions suffer a big loss to the Saints.

Worsfold wanted to highlight the courage of his team, how they never stopped trying even as they endured thrashings from teams with more class than the Bombers could ever hope to drag out of their hastily thrown together group of youngsters and ring-ins.

The line-up was assembled after 12 senior groups were banned for the entire season for doping, a belated punishment stemming from their involvement in the club's shady 2012 supplements program.

Worsfold said while it was great to end the year on a high note, the grit his players had shown all year would be what would drove them in the off-season.

"These players haven't lost momentum or lost faith at any point," he said.

"It's nice to finish with a win, but the momentum doesn't come from that, it comes from our desire to continue to get better."

Tall forward Joe Daniher, the subject of criticism in recent weeks for his poor kicking in front of goal, booted 5.2 against the Blues and seemed to gain more and more confidence as the game went on.

"He's a quality footballer who's got a bright future ahead, but he's like us, the Essendon footy club, we've got a lot of hard work ahead to reach where we want to get to," Worsfold said.

The future of top-up player Matthew Dea remains uncertain, with Worsfold refusing to confirm he will remain at the club in 2017.

Over the next few weeks Essendon staff will need to decide whether they want to keep Dea.

The 24-year-old was delisted by Richmond before being picked up by the Bombers for 2016 and has been one of their best top-ups, on Saturday managing 27 disposals.

Worsfold would not reveal whether Dea would remain a Bomber.

"I really don't want to put anything on it just in case, who knows, there's so many decisions to make," he said.

Carlton coach Brendon Bolton said he was disappointed in his team's lack of pressure in defence, particularly in the first half.

But he said it should not be seen as reflective of the Blues' entire season.

"Understand one thing, that performance will really steel and drive us over the pre-season to work incredibly hard," he said.

Bolton said Carlton would be active during the trade period, as they continued to try to improve their list.

But his message was about unity within the club - perhaps a subtle reference to 2015, when coach Mick Malthouse was sacked mid-season.

"We're proud that our club, players, coaches and administrators are all on the same page and united," he said.

"That's the one thing I think our members should take away, we are together.

"We've got an incredible amount of hard work ahead of us but there were some incredibly strong foundations laid this year."
