Giants say no to Tippett's terms

Kurt Tippett is set to join AFL premiers Sydney in next week's pre-season draft after Greater Western Sydney officially withdrew their interest.

Former Adelaide forward Tippett, who will miss the first 11 games of the season for his role in salary cap breaches and draft tampering, nominated for Tuesday's pre-season draft and set down the financial terms of his contract.

It was thought Tippett's salary requirements meant only GWS and the Swans would be in a position to select the 25-year-old.

However, Giants chief executive David Matthews says the asking price of Tippett is too high and it wouldn't be prudent for the fledgling club to sign him.

"Internally we established a value for Kurt Tippett based on his capabilities and whilst we were hopeful, his terms submitted this week confirmed that we are simply not in a position to pay what he wants," Matthews said in a statement.

"Particularly for a player who will miss most of the year through suspension.

"We will continue to look closely at talented and mature players who become available."

Tippett unsuccessfully sought a trade to the Swans this year, with the Crows having earlier entered into an improper side agreement to trade him to the club of his choice.

When a deal couldn't be struck, the irregularities of a three-year contract Tippett signed with Adelaide in 2009 emerged and payments of $200,000 outside the salary cap were also investigated.

Tippett was handed a 22-game ban for his role in the deal but 11 of those games were suspended for the next five years, while he was also fined $50,000.

  • Since when is Tippett a star? He did so little in Adelaide and suddenly he's a multi million dollar super star? Give me a break. The guy is worth about quarter of what he's asking for. End of story. The Swans are insane to even contemplate this guy.

    • I agree. Tippett only had a handful of 'good' games last season and even then, those games were not worth what he is asking. He will miss half the season and he is at the age where he is supposed to be in his prime. He is an absolute waste of money if you ask me and i am glad my club isn't going after him.

    • I agree totally... The term "STAR" gets launched way too often these days...

What did he do to make him a star? Over paid at Adelaide, and will be the same at sydney.. all the power to him and brilliant spin doctor manager.

I'd love to be paid to sit on the sideline for 1/2 a season and earn 1/2 what he will..

    • Alex your club has just spent a fortune on an aging outside mid fielder who is definitely passed his prime. Given that your midfield apart from Watson is as soft as butter Goddard hardly seems to be the answer to your dire problems..By the way who does Thommo intend to play on Tippett? A thirty eight year old? Can't wait to see the Tippett Fletcher match up.

    • The only thing i'd say for the swans is that they have a history of getting the very best out of imported players. Hall went from a solid performer at StKilda to absolute elite in Sydney.

Still not sure why they'd agree to pay him above the market value though.

      • I'd say there will be an expensive two years followed by a third year (contract extention) at minimum wage.

        Like Luke Ball to Collingwood.

      • totally agree , if i were the swans i would offer him match payments rather than a flat contract as he will possibly continue to get concussed( when he plays the crows) and will thus miss many matches. offer him what he is worth and see if he takes it remember this guy only wants to play in qld ( and suddenly sydney if the dosh is big)
