Essendon players are anxious: Goddard

Essendon player Brendon Goddard says his teammates are anxious, amid allegations they were given performance-enhancing drugs.

PRIZED Essendon recruit Brendon Goddard says its supporters need to stay true despite the performance-enhancing drug allegations that threaten to derail the Bombers' season.

Speaking at a NAB Cup launch ahead of Friday night's opener against Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs, Goddard issued a plea to fans not to jump to conclusions about what may or may not happen with its playing group amid the investigation by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.

''At this point in time, it's all allegations and at no point can you jump to conclusions,'' he said on Monday. ''As a player and as supporters, it's important to stick by the club because the boys are doing everything they can to prepare for another season of footy.

''Understandably, [the players] have been a bit anxious. It's probably hard for me to get my head around it because I wasn't there last year and I wasn't directly involved or affected, but what we've talked about as a group is what we can do as a team and as players.''

Goddard said, as a leader, he had particularly offered advice to the younger Bombers.

''I've offered my opinion on certain things to the younger guys and the playing group. As a whole team, we've really helped each other in certain situations particularly in the last week. We talked about what can do and … control what we can control, and that's really important for us as a playing group to move on … All we can control is our performance and what we do from Monday to Friday.''

''I don't think fearful is the right word. The players are quite anxious understandably but fearful is not the correct word.'' He said that at St Kilda, he would ask questions about any substance or supplement he was taking. ''Personally I do yes but I can't comment for [others].''

    • That might be true... but it was only a few years ago St kilda were embroiled in a saga of their own & BG probably felt he should have left back then.

  • Goddard really should have avoided using the words "...doing everything they can to prepare..."

    Surely that's the problem.

    • We all know how flaky bomber fans are. They'll be lying low, no doubt spooked by what's happened this past week. I encourage supporters of all other clubs to attend games to give the EFC an absolute earful. I'd say that drug scandal or no drug scandal of course, but we need to kick the Bombers whilst they're down

      • I think all sporting codes in Australia suspected of drug use should cancel their 2013 season until they sort out their players, coaches, assistants etc etc.

Think about it sport fans, do you think professional sports people would come out and support you if you got busted for drug use?

Not really good role models, let's not glorify them anymore!

          • Its probably at this point that he wishes he had either stayed at the Saints, or joined the Blues. The Bombers are going no where this year (again).

            • Asking people to stick by a club through hard times? That's a bit rich coming from Goddard.
