Brett Ratten will join Hawthorn as an assistant coach in season 2013.
Ratten was senior coach at Carlton from 2007 - 2012. He was recently replaced by former Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse.
Ratten told the Hawthorn website that he was thrilled to join the club.
''I’m really excited to have the opportunity to work with Alastair and the other assistant coaches,” Ratten said.
“I really respect how they play the game and I see this as a great opportunity for me and one I’m really looking forward to,” he said.
Senior coach Alastair Clarkson said he was happy to welcome Ratten to the Hawks' coaching panel.
“Brett is an excellent addition to our coaching line-up and will bring a great deal of experience and coaching nous to our Club,” he said.
Assistant coach Leon Cameron recently left Hawthorn to join Greater Western Sydney in a similar role.
