Jonathon Patton says GWS didn't need Lance Franklin

GWS forward Jonathon Patton says the Giants didn't really need Lance Franklin, but teammate Heath Shaw has cautioned against prematurely writing off the Swans star recruit.

Franklin kicked 1.1 in a quiet Sydney debut last Saturday against the victorious Giants, for whom Patton contributed three goals and fellow forward Jeremy Cameron kicked four.

Former Hawthorn spearhead Franklin chose to join the Swans after previously being tipped to become a Giant.

While the Giants missed out on Franklin, they were still able to recruit several other players, netting Shaw, Shane Mumford, Josh Hunt, Dylan Addison and Jed Lamb.

Patton and Cameron apart, the Giants also have another highly rated tall forward poised to make an impact in No.1 draft pick Tom Boyd, who kicked four goals in the reserves win over the Swans.

"I think we have a pretty good forward line as it is," Patton said.

"Jeremy has shown how good a player he is, and we drafted Tommy as well and he's going to be a superstar, and once I'm healthy ... I think I can make a big impact as well.

"I didn't think we really needed him at all, to be honest.

"He would have been nice because he is that good a player.

"But I think in the end it's worked out to our advantage getting Heath and 'mummy' as well and having Tom Boyd there."

Shaw rated as "amazing" the defensive job done on Franklin by Giants co-captain Phil Davies, who remained in a Sydney hospital on Monday after taking a knock to the kidney early in Saturday's game.

"We put a lot of time and effort into nullifying him (Franklin) because we know how good a player he is," Shaw said.

"It wouldn't surprise me if at the end of the year you look back and Buddy has kicked 80 goals for the year.

"It's one game him into it, so I wouldn't write him off just yet."

While the Giants refuse to reveal whether have raised their win target for 2014 following last Saturday's victory, Patton said if they played like they did last weekend, he was confident they could get more than some people expected.

The win was only the second Patton has played in after knee injuries limited him to just ten games in his first two seasons.

He stressed he was still some way off full match fitness.

"But that's going to come with the more games I play, and the more confidence I get in my body," Patton said.

Midfielder Rhys Palmer will be out for three to four weeks after suffering a hamstring injury against Sydney.

  • To Jonathon Patton,

It appears that in your youth, you never learnt the very valuable lesson about writing of people, especially Champions in their field of Sport.

You may be too young to remember, but watch Kieren Perkins win Gold in his pet event of the 1500 metres, after being relegated to being the 8th fastest in the 1996 Olympic 1500 metre swimming Final. He was written off before the swim only to prove that you don't write off champions as he stormed home & won from the outside lane.

I suggest that you might have just given the Swans more ammunition for the Round 15 match & I for one, am looking forward to this Round 15 match, where you might just be force fed your words by the Swans & especially Buddy Franklin.

    • To Glenn D,

I suggest you read what he actually said rather than make an incorrect inferrence.

He said the Gianst didn't need him as the players already playing for the giants were good enough. He rated Franklin as a player, but values having Mumford, Shaw and Boyd more.
