Footy fans vote with their feet

AFL fans are angry over new variable pricing for games and poor scheduling, senior AFL writer Rohan Connolly reports.

PT0M0S 620 349

Will have to wrap it up for today, though I'll try to get around to answering those published comments I haven't so far. Thanks for all the questions and general feedback, think both the AFL and media generally need to take on board the view of the average fan more than has necessarily been the case of late. Hopefully that might change sooner than later. And we'll see you back here at midday next Monday.

There's a message from the punters that is getting louder with each game that attracts below-the-odds numbers - that the AFL is severely on the nose with its supposed hardcore followers. Are you a disgruntled AFL fan?

Other topics you may like to discuss:

-Melbourne's loss to the Eagles

-The AFL's goal review system

Discuss the footy issues that matter to with The Age's voice of the people, at noon Monday.

Leave a comment and return at midday to join the discussion.

  • Tiges rightly criticised for letting Blues back into the game. Choking under pressure etc. However Horks are lauded for beating Essendon despite giving up a similar lead.

Also when it comes to woulda, coulda, shoulda, yes Blues kicking skill errors cost them game but equally Tiges defensive skill errors allowed Blues to have the shots. Easy to focus on kicking but assessment should be on all defensive AND offensive errors of both sides.

    Your thoughts ...

    • Hi Y & B, Fair enough points. I thought Tigers got themselves into trouble a bit trying to slow the game down when Carlton was coming. Have seen Richmond get into trouble doing this previously. Once their lead had been gobbled up they went on the offensive again and got the last two goals. Having said that, they at least had the resolve to stave Blues off. Would have been under the blowtorch had they lost again in similar circumstances.

  • Despite shocking game yesterday isn't Norfs biggest problem that their best players -- match winners -- are still veterans Boomer, Petrie, Wells and probably Thomas. The rest are serviceable but do not win them games.

    • Fair comment. Certainly need more consistency from the likes of Ziebell, Cunnington, Bastinac, Atley etc. Seems it always has to be one of the older heads that drags them over the line.

  • Should Channel 7 and Fox Footy replace Melbourne FC games with a test pattern?

    • Ker-ching! Demons do seem to specialise in early-season shockers. GWS this week will be interesting!

  • The Great Ticket Price Hike seems really ill-advised, and no one has been spared. I have a handful of mates who don't have the cash for a membership but do like to come along with me into the AFL Members stand from time to time. Even that's out of reach now. Guest passes for blockbuster games have doubled! A whole new tiered ticketing system has been implemented to gouge the customer - it's about hard to understand as it is to afford.

    • Hi Konrad, Think the AFL snuck under a few guards with this one. Doesn't help that the media isn't affected by it already having accreditation. But this issue certainly isn't going to go away despite the league continuing to turn a blind eye.

  • Hi Rohan, I quite like the way Essendon are playing. I was wondering: is the solution to an even balance of trade through tarrifs or should we be looking for a global market solution?
