Can the Cats stay on top?

Geelong have been at or near the top of the AFL ladder for the last eight years, so why aren't pundits tipping them for the flag in 2014? Rohan Connolly reports.

That's it for today all, thanks for all your questions and comments. Some quality teams at the top of the ladder, perhaps not so much at the other end! But some big games coming in next few weeks, Swans and Cats on Thursday night isn't far off at all. Enjoy your footy, we'll see you back here next Monday at 12pm.

Discuss the footy issues that matter to you with The Age's voice of the people, Rohan Connolly.

  • My 12 YO wants to know, if I am tagging, am I allowed to punch in the guts like Cameron did to Vickery. Let's stop this nonsense. Play the game. Stamp out behind the ball thuggery.

    • Hi Robzee, There's thuggery, and then there's real thuggery. I might be a bit old school, but reckon some of the tactics taggers employ aren't a lot better than the retribution occasionally dished out.

  • Rohan, as awful as GWS were as a whole, there is something in particular about Jeremy Camerson that seems 'off'. He looks nowhere near the player he was last year and on Saturday, he simply looked like he didn't want to be there. That said, it's really hard to want to be there when you are an All-Australian forward and you start the game in defence - why??

    • Hi Janey, Agreed. Guess the only answer can be how short-staffed they are in backline at the moment without David, Haynes and Mohr. Could be a pointer to the future, too, having to fit Patton and Boyd in same forward set-up. He's certainly looking out of sorts wherever at the moment, though.

  • What about Cloke, you haven't listed him as one of the topics Rohan. Why does Collingwood pay so much to a player who can't kick, any ideas?

    • Hi Trashman, Don't know if it's "can't kick" at the moment as much as "can't get a kick". He's a frustrating conveyance, for sure, but having seen his best, think he's also the difference between Pies being a top eight side and a top four side I reckon. Just have to persist and hope he turns a corner.

  • Open flag. Cats have a chance like several others if they find momentum at the right time.
GWS are kids that will have bad games. With 18 teams someone is in the bottom four and someone will stink.
Good on Jack. He's a good lad that wears his heart on his sleeve.
    I hope not.
Ablett. Rules are rules. Ask Corey and Chris.
Not this year but they look good. The three tall forwards look good.
And how good was Jimmy Bartel? Maybe he stays in the midfield.

  • Rohan
I have some questions regarding Geelong’s Simonds Stadium fixtures. Given it is factually the most difficult ground in the competition for visiting teams to win on, why is only one of the seven games Geelong play there this season against a team from last year’s final eight? Given they’ve won something like 50 of their last 53 there that’s a hell of a lot of bonus premiership points courtesy of the AFL. This season for example they play Adelaide, WCE, NM, St.Kilda, WB, Freo and the Lions.
Should the AFL give Geelong a walk up 24 - 28 points per season at the expense of the lesser performed and low crowd drawing teams by playing them at Simonds?
Why should all clubs not take their turn and be tested by the extreme difficulty of playing and the near impossibility of winning at Simonds?
Why do Collingwood, Hawthorn, Essendon, Carlton etc virtually never play there but get to play Geelong on far more neutral grounds in Etihad and the MCG giving them a much greater chance of winning and getting four points than those teams forced to play at Simonds? North Melbourne, West Coast and Adelaide who are all final eight aspirants are forced to play at Simonds but for example Collingwood don’t and have in fact only played at Simonds once in the last fifteen years. So both Geelong and Collingwood etc are handed a clear competitive advantage by the League. Why should crowd drawing ability give these clubs such an unfair advantage over other teams when four points or even percentage can decide if a team makes the finals or not? Surely "equalization" should be about equal opportunity and degree of difficulty and not just about economics.
