And we'll leave it there for today, people. Thanks for all the questions and comments once again, always appreciated, as well as the feedback. Looks like the top four and even possibly top eight are pretty settled, let's hope there's a few more twists left in the tale yet. See you back here next Monday at 12pm.

  • Well another season down the tubes at Carlton.. And we have backed ourselves into a corner.
We have an ancient coach with no clue who took over from a bloke that had the team heading in the right direction.. Bringing overpaid lemons from his old club just to give them another chance... Has Thomas done anything?

But if we sack the coach now, it will drop us another 3-5 yrs backwards.. but its probably the right move. Moldhouse doesn't exactly have a great record I don't feel.

Its also going to be a sad decade for some of the AFL's founding clubs...

But how good are some of the recycled players this year - no less than Mumford, Pods and Chappy...

    • Hi Davo, Agree that the Blues are in a pretty perilous situation. In retrospect, 2011 was about the peak for the current playing group, but given how close they were to a prelim final that year I also understand why they thought they were closer than has transpired. I certainly wouldn't be sacking this coach, too. But do think they'll need to be a bit braver in terms of the list and particularly giving youth a go than they have been the past year-and-a-half. There was something particularly symbolic about the loss to GWS as far as the future goes.

    • As long as you give malthouse 10 years he will get you a flag. Embrace your next rebuild.

    • Rohan, spot on. They seriously misjudged their list peaking in 2011 when they thought they were on the way up. They need to cull anyone who won't be around to play finals in 3-5 years and recruit youth.

  • Hi Rohan

Didn't see a lot of footy on the weekend, including not being able to get any coverage of the Magpies-Hawks game (here in Canberra at least) due to not having pay TV and also a lack of ABC radio coverage. Nonetheless, I got the impression that a brave effort overall was spoiled by the over-reliance on Cloke (thank God he seems to be back in form!) and the lack of consistent effort and attitude across all four quarters. In some ways, I see both questions as coming down to Collingwood's inconsistent midfield, something that puzzles in light of the presence there of quality players such as Pendlebury and Beams, both of whom seem to pretty decent possession gatherers. My overall feeling is that the Bucks experiment remains a work in progress and that the relative youthfulness of the side is also a key factor, both in the lack of four-quarter consistency, the lack of spread in goalkickers to which you have pointed and also in the stuttering midfield. What do you think?

    • Hi Mike, The Pies are about where I thought they'd be this year. Certainly not getting enough goals out of the midfield at the moment, and I think partly the loss of personnel and some rebound out of defence has forced key midfielders to work more defensively. Don't seem to have as many small, goalkicking forwards now, either, after departures of Didak and Krakouer. Injuries also haven't been kind this season. Still don't think they're that far off the pace, however.

    • Hi Rohan
Just wondering what your thoughts are on retrospectively extending the comp back to 1870. Justice and recognition of the founders of our game or a cynical move to give the blues more flags (if you can't win them in the present ...)?

  • Rohan while I agree the top 8 seems relatively settled, I don't think it is done and dusted just yet. North and to a lesser extent, the Gold Coast, remain flaky enough to give the teams just outside a chance to take their spots. Indeed, this could possibly apply to Collingwood also. For all the talk of their effort against Hawthorn, the fact remains their recent form hasn't been brilliant and a couple of more losses in coming weeks could see them under pressure.

Although when all is said and done it's hard to see Essendon, Adelaide and West Coast playing well (or consistently) enough to make it to the 8.

    • Hi Janey, I still think Gold Coast are the most vulnerable of those inside the eight. More big tests against Hawthorn and Collingwood next up, and Port Adelaide and Essendon over last three rounds. Like you, though, don't have a lot of of faith in those outside to show the consistency required to force them out.

  • Interesting Stats released by The Lions Roar regarding retention of players. Is it purely related to the club or is it a bigger issue and will it get the attention it deserves? Shame a supporter group has to do the work that the club and / or AFL should be doing. Kudos to them for their efforts.
