And that's where we finish up today, folks. Thanks for all the questions and comments again, your support of this blog is much appreciated. As one poster observed, we haven't seen a ladder battle this tight in all sections, top of the eight, lower half, and even bottom of the ladder, for some time. Should be a great finish to the home and away season. Catch you back here at 12pm next Monday.

  • Hey Rohan,
I don't get the dissatisfaction over bye rounds when they are the easiest part of the draw to fix: How about Rounds 1-3 having 9 games (no one should need a rest yet). Rounds 4-21 can have 8 so every club still gets 2 byes (disregarding the nonsensical split round 1) and we still get the best part of a full round instead of the half baked 4, 5 or 6 games. You could even go without the unnoticed 4:40 Saturday games for those rounds. The two teams coming off the bye will provide more opportunities to try out the Thursday night slot.. In the same timeframe, you'll still get the same 198 games, the players will still get two byes and we won't have anymore half baked weekends.
Surely that is win-win all round. Any chance the AFL could mae it happen?

    • Hi Mal, Makes sense, and we've already had similar set-up in 2011 when Gold Coast came in and there were 17 teams. I guess a couple of issues could be timing of the bye becomes a factor, would think having your bye closer to mid-season more advantageous than early, and would also mean there's never a round when the ladder is true reflection of the state of play with different number of games played by some teams every week. In terms of taking the air out of the season's momentum, though, I tend to agree.

    • Uneven games played can be sorted by reintroduction of "Match Ratios". As it is, the media gets carried away by teams moving into top 4 etc when they've played one more game than everyone else (eg on a Friday night or first week of a split round). This system would give everyone at least one bye close to middle of season (Rounds 8-16) so it still achieves that aim.

  • Here we go. Watch the jump all over Hawthorn up. To be fair Rohan, they have been your pick for a while now, but it's frustrating to see how fickle the media is after just one game.

Now, on to my question... The Hawks are back to almost a full side. Rioli and Lake are obviously big ins, but Sydney arguably has more quality to come back in and will benefit from getting a few more games into Tippett. If the Hawks and Sydney make it through to the GF with a full list, who wins?

    • Whoops, messed that first line up! Should read: *Watch the media jump all over Hawthorn* lol

    • @JD. They've been written off at various stages this year or at least had doubts cast due to various injuries and Clarkson's illness. Saturday nights win was resounding so it would be logical for the media to focus on them.

    • Besides Dan Hanneberry and Ryhs Shaw, who's the quality coming back into Sydney? Doesn't your argument stand for Hawthorn as well, they've had to deal with more injuries then Sydney, wouldn't they better for the run also. With these teams it simply comes down to who takes their chances in front of goal. Don't try and overthink with quality to come into the side, I think any man would say Rioli and Lake are a better 2 inclusions then Hanneberry and Shaw

    • Hi JD, Glad you noted I've stuck with them! Think it's arguable Sydney has more quality to come back in aside from Hannebery. As far as GF goes, suspect it might end up being like Saturday night, a toss of the coin. But I tipped Hawthorn then, so no reason I wouldn't tip them again if both get there.

  • Rohan I have always found free kicks from ruck duels at boundary throw ins to be one of lives mysteries. So often they seem to be twiggy touchwood (especially relative to what we see dished out in packs and mauls). That being said if a bloke cops a deliberate elbow and is doubled over how is that not a free kick?

I think Vickery gets 4 or 5 for the whack but for me the umpire is culpable for not blowing the whistle after the infringement by Cox. If that happens anywhere else on the ground it is a free every time. What do reckon?
