Melbourne AFL rookie-listed player Leigh Williams is expected to make a full recovery after he was placed into an induced coma with a viral infection of the brain.
Williams became severely ill on Saturday night and was taken to Box Hill Hospital, where the 21-year-old was diagnosed with viral encephalitis.
He was treated with anti-viral medication and was conscious on Monday morning, after being placed in a coma on Saturday night.
Williams will remain in hospital for another two weeks, the Demons said on Wednesday.
"This is obviously deeply concerning for Leigh, his family and the club," Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said.
"Our focus is to ensure Leigh's health continues to improve, as it has over the past 48 hours and that he makes a full recovery.
"Returning to football is secondary to Leigh's health and we certainly won't be rushing anything in that regard."
