Wells injured his Achilles during the team's round two match with Brisbane, after missing 16 weeks of play last season with a foot injury.
He was considered a chance to return as early as round four, but coach Brad Scott has been adamant Wells would not return to the competition until he was completely recovered.
Wells would not play on the coming weekend, and he was unlikely to play in the next two or three matches, but Scott said he doubted the break would stretch to six weeks.
It was not a career-ending injury, Scott said.
"It's frustrating Daniel, and it's frustrating for us that we can't give a definitive timeframe on his return to play," Scott said.
"As it sits at the moment, we're going to list him as indefinite because we can't put a time frame on it"
Nick Dal Santo's recovery was going well but Scott did not comment on when he would play again.
The midfielder suffered a hamstring injury, which required surgery, on the same night as Wells.
"He feels like he can run at a reasonable speed now, so it'll just be a matter of ticking the boxes and progressing for Nick, but we're really wrapped with his progress so far, we think he's right on track.
"Things will come out in the wash-up, but all I can say is I absolutely welcome an investigation and look forward to putting the facts in the story."
