But club officials have said the veteran utility did not want a fuss to be made over him and are urging well-wishers to instead post their messages of support online.

Hawthorn announced on Tuesday that Roughead's cancer had returned - he had a melanoma removed from his lip last year - and there was no date set for his return to football.

Hawks fans are using social media to urge all those attending the MCG clash to stand up and applaud in the second minute of the second quarter, in reference to Roughead wearing No.2.

The Hawthorn cheer squad has been sharing the call-out on Twitter, which originally came from a parody Alastair Clarkson.

Club officials have created a special page on the Hawks' website where fans can write to Roughead, with a statement saying they would collate them into a book to give to him.

Football operations manager Chris Fagan is quoted as saying it was a great way to look after Roughead and his family.

"Jarryd is a man of little fuss and is incredibly humbled by the many suggestions that have been flowing in with regards to ways for fans to show support at this time," he said in the statement.

"We feel this is the perfect way to gather the many well wishes flowing in for Jarryd."

Meanwhile, in the wake of Roughead's melanoma diagnosis the AFL has confirmed that Auskick participants are encouraged to be sun smart, but not necessarily wear hats because of the potential for injury.

An AFL spokesman said hats are not worn during junior games because of the potential that another child could be struck in the eye or face by the peak of the cap when tackling.

"While we are primarily a winter sport, there are guidelines about regular breaks, water, sunscreen etcetera, depending on the location where matches and Auskick centres are being run," the spokesman said.

"Children can obviously play in long-sleeved tops as their personal preference and as you go to senior levels, competitions will have heat policies around matches played in the early part of the season when the weather can be warmer."
