Gold Coast player Steven May is understood to have thought he had been hit by one of pop star Rihanna's bodyguards outside a Los Angeles night club before being told by teammates that it had been Suns veteran Campbell Brown.

May, who has a fractured jaw and will undergo surgery today or tomorrow, had walked away with a group of teammates from a queue outside the nightclub after a verbal altercation with Hawthorn player Josh Gibson, who was in the line with Brown.

The players stopped when Rihanna pulled up and May was one of the players who took a photo on his phone of her entering the club. After that, it is alleged, May was hit and immediately pushed into a taxi by his teammates.

As further details emerge of the incident with the arrival of the full Suns group back in the country, Fairfax Media understands May thought he must have been hit by one of Rihanna's entourage for having taken the photo.

May is understood to have had words with Brown's former Hawthorn teammate Josh Gibson outside the night club, and Brown had verbally defended Gibson.

The Suns are speaking to the players as they arrive back in the country before deciding what action to take over the incident.

The Suns are understood to have spoken with the AFLPA about the situation.
