Giants coach Leon Cameron all but confirmed the club would select powerful Eastern Ranges teenager Tom Boyd with one of its top two picks at Thursday's AFL draft.

The 18-year-old, who is 200 centimetres tall, has drawn comparisons with Geelong's Tom Hawkins.

Boyd's addition and development could give the Giants an ominous forward line of the future, combining with All-Australian full-forward Jeremy Cameron and 2011 No.1 draft pick Jonathon Patton, still both just 20.

Cameron named Sandringham Dragons midfielder Josh Kelly and Oakleigh Chargers forward Jack Billings as other possible targets, although the Giants will finalise their draft strategy on Wednesday.

The Giants were in Canberra on Tuesday to launch their community camp, on December 2-3, building towards their pre-season match against the Swans at Manuka Oval on February 20.

Having bolstered key positions and experience during the trade period, highlighted by the recruitment of Shane Mumford from the Swans and Heath Shaw from Collingwood, the Giants now enter Thursday's draft with a focus on picking the best talent, regardless of positional needs.

''He is obviously a terrific young talent and he's obviously in our sights at the moment,'' Leon Cameron said of Boyd.

''He's a significant player and I'm sure he's going to have hopefully a very, very good, long career with the Giants.''

Mumford has reported to training at the Giants earlier than required, the premiership-winning ruckman keen to have an immediate impact.

His first playing assignment will be against his former club in Canberra and Mumford has already put his hand up for duty.

''I definitely won't be holding back and I don't think they'll be holding back either,'' Mumford said of his former teammates.

''It's an exciting time with these young kids [at the Giants] going into their third year.''

Cameron said the Giants would start next year with a more balanced roster than ever to climb off the AFL's bottom rung.

The Giants have added Mumford, Shaw, Josh Hunt (Geelong), Dylan Addison (Bulldogs) and Jed Lamb (Swans), while their younger players now have the benefit of two years in the AFL.

''We need to improve on our first couple of years,'' Cameron said. ''We've built a foundation already with a number of young kids that we've brought in through the draft, but this year we've made a significant investment in terms of mature-age footy players coming to our footy club.

''All these players are coming from really powerful clubs, premiership clubs … we need to start to win games.''

Cameron said the shortened format of the AFL's pre-season would ensure the Giants and Swans fielded strong teams in Canberra. Each of the league's 18 teams will play only two pre-season games.
