Coaching legend Tommy Hafey's health battle continues, with the 82-year-old back in hospital after complications following surgery to remove a brain tumour in early March.

The four-time Richmond premiership coach had returned home after successful surgery, but was recently readmitted to a Melbourne hospital.

Hafey was an inaugural inductee into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996 and was named coach of Richmond's team of the century in 1998. Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale said Hafey was ‘‘fighting and he’s been a fighter all his life. We were aware he had had an operation and aware he was back in hospital and things were looking up and all his faculties were with him. But he had slowed up a little.''

Gale said the club hoped Hafey would be back on his feet soon. ‘‘He’s tough as teak and we’re confident given his incredible mental strength, physical dedication and wholesome life, we're confident he’ll prevail.

‘‘There’s plenty in Tommy’s tank yet.’’
