Who your club picked: Pre-season and rookie drafts

Date

AFL clubs' picks through the rookie and pre-season drafts.

ADELAIDE Nick Joyce (Pick No.10, pre-season draft), Kyle Hartigan (No.14, rookie draft), Jack Osborn (No.36, rookie), Tim Klaosen (No.42, rookie)

The Crows must hope Tuesday's drafts close the book on a summer of scandal. Midfielder Joyce, the innocent party caught up in the Tippett affair, was promised he would be re-drafted and was in the pre-season draft, before Tippett officially became a Swan with the next pick. Adelaide went for a key-position player in Hartigan in the rookie draft.

BRISBANE LIONS Nick Hayes (No.6, rookie), Callum Bartlett (No.21, rookie), Jordon Bourke (No.56, rookie)

The Lions were prepared to punt on having another look at Bartlett after a couple of serious knee injuries. They also bolstered their on-ball brigade through Hayes, and in the ruck through Bourke, the son of former Brisbane player Damian.

CARLTON Jaryd Cachia (No.9, rookie), Andrew Collins (No.23, rookie)

The Blues' big news has come from its leadership group and not in the draft, where they recycled a couple of players in Collins and Cachia, the latter having enjoyed a good stint at Norwood after he was previously on Carlton's rookie list.

COLLINGWOOD Kyle Martin (No.13, rookie), Sam Dwyer (No.27, rookie), Adam Oxley (No.35, rookie), Jack Frost (No.41, rookie), Ben Hudson (No.47, rookie), Peter Yagmoor (No.49, rookie), Ben Richmond (No.53, rookie)

Passed in the pre-season draft but filled its quota in the rookie draft with seven picks, most of them used on ready-made players. The Magpies drew three players from the VFL, gave Yagmoor another chance and extended the career of evergreen Hudson, who will provide rucking insurance should a serious injury befall Darren Jolly.

ESSENDON Will Hams (No.6, pre-season), Ariel Steinberg (No.8, rookie)

Overlooked Dayle Garlett, who had been training with the Bombers since his off-field discipline questions counted against him in the national draft. Gippslander Hams might be viewed as a safer option but is highly-regarded as an inside midfielder.

FREMANTLE Jack Hannath (No.8, pre-season), Jesse Crichton (No.14, pre-season), Matthew Taberner (No.11, rookie), Alex Howson (No.25, rookie), Craig Moller (No.46, rookie)

A club thinking big. The Dockers went for big bodies by selecting a couple of key-forward types in Howson and Taberner and a young ruckman in Hannath, who has established himself in the SANFL. Crichton gets the chance to add to his 17 career games.

GEELONG Did not take part in either draft.

GOLD COAST SUNS Leigh Osborne (No.2, rookie), Andrew Boston (No.55, rookie)

Adds some fibre to its defence through the addition of Osborne, who enjoyed a strong season in the VFL, while Boston is a local lad who can add some dash to the midfield.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY Bret Thornton (No.1, pre-season), Dean Brogan (No.12, pre-season), Jack Redfern (No.51, rookie), Zachary Williams (No.54, rookie)

The fledgling side needs all the big bodies and experience it can get and so will surely get plenty more use out of Thornton, who could find himself beside another ex-Blue, Setanta O'hAilpin, in the Giants backline. Brogan was cut with the intention of making a place for Tippett and so was re-drafted when the ex-Crow's asking price was out of the Suns' reach.

HAWTHORN Jonathon Ceglar (No.15, rookie), Ciaran Kilkenny (No.28, rookie)

Ceglar's drafting after two years on Collingwood's list means the Hawks have made height the focus in the off-season. Key defender Brian Lake was traded in from the Bulldogs, while key-position players Tim O'Brien and Kaiden Brand were picked in the national draft. Kilkenny is an international rookie with a Gaelic football background.

MELBOURNE Nathan Stark (No.3, rookie), Mitchell Clisby (No.19, rookie)

The Demons were busy through the trade period and complemented that by focusing on younger players in the rookie draft. Stark is a tough midfielder and Clisby a running defender who played in the SANFL.

NORTH MELBOURNE Tim McGenniss (No.10, rookie), Ben Speight (No.24, rookie), Cameron Richardson (No.34, rookie)

Just the one new face in onballer McGenniss, as Speight and Richardson were given another chance each despite neither playing a game in 2012.

PORT ADELAIDE Sam Colquhoun (No.3, pre-season), Kane Mitchell (No.5, rookie), Justin Hoskin (No.20, rookie)

Baulked at recruiting Liam Jurrah and instead went for midfield depth. Hoskin has played for Port's SANFL side, Colquhoun is another local and Mitchell had a great season in the WAFL, winning the Sandover Medal. At 23, he could be a ready-made type.

RICHMOND Ricky Petterd (No.7, rookie), Sam Lonergan (No.22, rookie), Orren Stephenson (No.33, rookie), Cadeyn Williams (No.40, rookie)

Defied the name and nature of the rookie draft by opting for three players with plenty of football experience. Former Essendon player Lonergan will add depth to the midfield, Petterd proved at times he was a livewire in Melbourne's forward line and the Tigers will hope they can get the same impact out of Stephenson that they did with Ivan Maric in 2012.

ST KILDA Did not take part in either draft.

SYDNEY Kurt Tippett (No.11, pre-season), Jake Lloyd (No.16, rookie), Xavier Richards (No.29, rookie), Dane Rampe (No.37, rookie), Daniel Robinson (No.50, rookie), Brandon Jack (No.57, rookie), Sam Naismith (No.58, rookie)

A good day for the Swans. The reigning premier got its man in Tippett, despite him not becoming eligible until midway through next season, and filled out some junior cover in the ruck, midfield and defence. Worked the family angles to select Xavier Richards, the brother of Ted, and Brandon Jack, the brother of Kieran. Adam Goodes was also a winner, as his younger brother, Brett, finally got himself on a list, albeit with the Western Bulldogs.

WEST COAST Callum Sinclair (No.12, rookie), Jamie Bennell (No.26, rookie)

Sinclair, a ruckman from Victoria, was rewarded for moving to the WAFL, but starts well behind the league's best ruck combination in Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui. Bennell might be handy as a small forward in his home state.

WESTERN BULLDOGS Brett Goodes (No.4, rookie)

The Bulldogs had the choice of two well-credentialled players in Goodes and Brent Prismall but the only spot went Goodes' way. His brother is a superstar, but Goodes has already enjoyed a good career in his own right, having starred in the VFL and in South Australian and Darwin leagues. Is already entrenched at Whitten Oval in his role as player wellbeing manager.
