The Giants have a 10-year deal with the ACT government worth $23 million to play three AFL premiership matches and a pre-season fixture in Canberra until the end of 2021.

The ACT government copped some flack for making such a big investment years ago, but Matthews says results and crowd figures should mean the powers that be feel vindicated.

Recent results have upped GWS' value to the sporting market and Giants chief executive David Matthews told ABC Grandstand the club won't be asking for any less money when the next deal rolls around.

But if the ACT government invest in the club, the club is open to investing in Manuka Oval.

The J-Curve or the J-Curse?

Canberra fans were denied the chance to see Giants veteran Steve Johnson in action, but his teammates did their bets to pick up the slack.

Midfielder Dylan Shiel's snap set shot from 35 metres out on the boundary line was an absolute beauty, and the third "tribute" to their injured teammate.

Shiel was a standout for the Giants before he left the field with a shoulder injury, but coach Leon Cameron says it was just a stinger.

All Australian defender Heath Shaw limped off in the third quarter before returning to the field in the forward line.

Scully's ton

Tom Scully had the weight of the world on his shoulders when he arrived in western Sydney.

He was the number one draft pick that had worn the No. 31 made famous by Australian rules legend Ron Barassi in Melbourne, where he had struggled to live up to his potential before joining the Giants on a rich deal.

It was easy to see how hard it was at times for Scully to find his feet.

But now, having become the third player to reach 100 games for GWS after Callan Ward and Toby Greene, there is no doubting Scully's credentials as one of the competition's premier talents.

Port Adelaide's Giant headache

GWS took just six marks in the opening quarter, the second lowest single quarter return in the club's short history.

At that stage, Port Adelaide butchered a host of early chances but remained well in control of the contest. But those mistakes were ones they were nearly left to rue.

Eight minutes into the second quarter, Port Adelaide were leading the marks 37-9 as the hosts struggled to create uncontested possessions.
