Cameron also believes Gold Coast Suns superstar Gary Ablett could make a shock return from a shoulder injury for Saturday night's clash of the expansion clubs at Manuka Oval.

The Giants will be chasing their third win from four games when they venture to Canberra for the second time this season.

With a 2-1 record after the first three rounds, the Giants are being talked about as finals contenders.

But the on-field improvement has led to the Giants having to swat away rivals to keep their hands off their off-contract players.

Having already secured All-Australian forward Jeremy Cameron and Phil Davis to long-term contracts, the next task for the Giants is retaining the likes of Dylan Shiel, Adam Treloar, Stephen Coniglio and Will Hoskin-Elliott.

"I'd love to, absolutely, but I don't put any pressure on those young lads," Leon Cameron said.

"They've got to make their own minds up about - do they want to be part of a footy club that is in this competition to win premierships?

"I can see in the eyes of all these young lads that they love being at this footy club."

The Giants are on track to surpass last season's total of six wins.

They are also capable of matching the 10 victories the Suns recorded in their fourth season last year.

"I understand there's always going to be that comparison because it's the 17th and the 18th team, but to be really honest the list builds have ... in some ways been different," Cameron said.

"You've got to compare yourself against all 17 other teams, not just the Gold Coast.

"I never put a ceiling on young talent because anything is possible."

The Suns are winless this season, but showed signs of life in a nine-point loss to Geelong at Skilled Stadium last weekend.

Ablett missed the match with his former club with a shoulder injury, but Cameron expects the dual Brownlow medallist to take the field.

"I know they've said he's out indefinitely, but we actually think he's a chance to play," Cameron said.

"Until he's actually ruled completely out, we've got to plan for him to play."

However, Cameron isn't getting caught up in talk that the Giants are capable of reaching the finals this season.

"It's such an even competition that there's going to be a logjam between first and 18th," Cameron said.

"You'll find that top spot will be 15 or 16 wins and bottom spot will be six or seven wins.

"Our expectation is that we compete longer in games.

"We're in pretty good form, but saying that we need to play four quarters of footy."
