Frankston Dolphins president Bruce Cass and former coach Robbie Mace, both described as middle-aged men, were apparently involved in a fight at half-time during the Dolphin's loss to Geelong's VFL side on Sunday.

The scuffle is said to have taken place in front of the social club at Frankston Park in sight of fans.

Frankston police sergeant Phil Marshall said the men were being investigated for alleged assault and making threats.

Sgt Marshall said violence at local football matches was uncommon.

AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said AFL Victoria had asked the national body to look into the matter.

"Nothing will happen until police have completed their enquiries," he said.

Keane refused to say under what circumstances the AFL might impose sanctions.

The club's general manager Simon Green said Frankston's committee of management was meeting on Tuesday night to determine the club's response.

He said the club would release those details once it had established the facts.
