Facilities and a potential women's side were two key topics discussed between the Swans and the AFL Commission on Thursday, with Sydney continuing to scour the city's eastern suburbs for a suitable secondary training location.

Swans Head of Football Tom Harley said the club had been buoyed by the immediate success of the women's game in round one last weekend, but reiterated expanding to include a women's team was not possible until facilities were upgraded.

Moore Park is not suitable given the amount of shared public land while Henson Park, where the Swans played an intra-club trial match last night, is also used by the Newtown Jets.

Blacktown International Sportspark has also been floated as a potential location, although it's some 40km from the club's SCG training base which Harley likened to asking a Melbourne team to train and play in Geelong.

"Us as a club, and me as an individual have been really enthused by the weekend with what's just happened with the women's league, you can't not be excited about it," Harley said.

"Certainly we're having ongoing conversations internally to ensure that when the next round comes around we're at the pointy end of that.

"The primary concern for us and it was almost the decision was made for us in the fact we couldn't house a team, that's just the reality of it.

"It's a real challenge, we met with the Commission yesterday and facilities were agenda item 1a and we'll keep pushing that for the code. Like anything we want to do well and we just didn't have the physical infrastructure to do it well."

The lack of a secondary facility prevented the Swans from submitting an application to house a women's team in the inaugural eight-team competition, which includes the cross-town GWS Giants.

AFL chief Gillon McLachlan has already ruled out bringing in more teams next year despite the high attendance and television numbers in round one, but said this week the league would look at expansion for the 2019 season.

"We've had really productive conversations with the AFL and the commissioner - they understand that challenge for us," Harley said.

"Sydney's a massively dense population with probably the most fierce sporting competition in the world really in terms of codes and clubs competing for green space and so we need to be a part of that for sure.

"We're absolutely committed to diversity in all areas of society and certainly we want to be a leading player in that in AFL circles."

The Swans emerged largely unscathed from Friday's trial despite the searing first-half heat, with a minor knock to Harry Cunningham's knee the only injury concern.
